Am I correct (reading DAN's terms at https://www.diversalertnetwork.org/files/handbook.pdf ) that their insurance covers only accidents that happen 50 miles from your permanent address as listed with DAN on your membership? That is, if you do local dives that are like 30 miles away, you are not covered?

I read it like this only applies to the Travel Assist and evacuation part... ? But again I'm puzzled with this whole insurance system anyway ;-)

So, what is evacuation? Is heli ride to a chamber considered evacuation?

So this is what you get as a US resident if you sign insurance with DAN Europe EUR 82,- is around USD 91,- and this is imho by far more than DAN US has to offer... at least for some states... the PRO insurance differs slightly in equipment loss and disability coverage.
There are also attractive Family Memberships available! i.e 1 pro member and up to 3 family member as sport member for just EUR 183,88

So the insurance fee is a one time annual fee? Here the Guardian is $125. That's $125 per year? Or per month? If it's per year, that's pretty darn cheap!

No. This applies to the evacuation coverage under Travel Assist only (not the Dive Accident Insurance). DAN will pay for the cost of evac up to $100k starting at least 50 miles from your home.

The 50 mile radius requirement also rears its head in the Dive Accident Insurance portion coverage with regard to non-diving accidents. (Yes, a bit circular, but that's every insurance policy).

I did a 3 tank dive shortly after my OW and forgot to purchase DAN before I went. I remember thinking to myself as I was getting ready to do my backroll "I hope nothing goes wrong today, because if I live my wife is going to kill me anyway"...lol Luckily nothing happened, but I purchased it as soon as I got home that night. It's really pennies in grand scheme of how much money you invest into scuba diving.

Sold. Air evacuation isn't a far-fetched notion at all if you're diving anywhere off the beaten path, which is probably most of us at one time or another. I've been at the Master level all these years and that suddenly seems like such a dumb choice, considering. I'm upgrading to Guardian since I've got a liveaboard trip coming in a couple months. Thanks for making me think.

It's not only when it's remote that they air evac. I have a friend who got airlifted from the shore to the city (probably 10 miles by land) because it was a holiday and there were parades and traffic and they didn't want to delay treatment.
