Please disregard the below post. I see that the question has already been addressed (well you can reply if you really want to). Sorry
I just renewed my DAN membership with the preferred insurance package. I have never used the insurance and naturally hope that I never have to use it. I do have full health insurance aside from DAN. I am a recreational AOW/nitrox diver who takes two or three dive trips a year and make about 40 diver a year.
Do you and the divers you know carry DAN insurance? I have been out with one charter in North Carolina that would not take you without it. That is the only time I have ever been asked about it at a dive location. I certainly don't mind supporting DAN research but do most divers with health insurance also get the DAN insurance? Supposedly it can be a big help when diving away from your home country where there can be complications with your health insurance. When my wife fractured her skull in a bike accident in France it took a while to get all the ducks in order but she was covered by her health plan.

I too have the preferred plan, I wish all of my insurance was that inexpensive :) I will be more than happy if I never have to use it too.

I have it as a supplement to the health care plan from my job which really stinks.

I and every diver I know carry DAN insurance. That's pretty much the typical answer to every one of the many many threads that have discussed this topic. It's cheap. If you're looking for someone to tell you it's a good idea to risk financial devastation to save $70 per year, you probably won't find it here. That's a decision you'll have to make yourself.

Well that really was my question. If you have good health insurance would a dive accident result in "financial devastation"? I am not saying that it would not. I just asked the question in case anyone had an informative answer. My only experience using US health insurance internationally was in France and everything was covered. This may not be the case in other countries such as Mexico. Some on the board may have experience in regard to this and could share some insight. As I stated I already renewed my DAN insurance and was not "looking for someone to tell you it's a good idea to risk financial devastation to save $70 per year, you probably won't find it here"
Sometimes no response is better then a knee jerk response.

Yet your question is really for your insurance provider. I have great health insurance too and I choose to also have DAN insurance. What exactly do you want anyone on this board to tell you?? So we say, "yes, you're safe" without knowing any of the particulars of your coverage and you would take that advice?? I sure wouldn't.

If you feel confident that your insurance will cover a chamber ride costing 10s of thousands of dollars without a huge deductible, then don't get DAN. If you feel confident they will cover all the other things DAN insurance covers like extending your trip and expenses related to that, then don't get DAN. Heck, maybe your and my idea of financial devastation are totally different and dropping 20 or 30 thousand dollars to stay on some island an extra week taking chamber rides is no burden at all to you (though I doubt it because then you'd just pony up the $70). You see how you're kind of fishing in the wrong pond? These are questions only you and your insurance provider can answer. Call them and ask. If you're satisfied that you're covered, then skip DAN.

Sometimes a question asked of people who can in no way be expected to give you a good answer is a waste of time.

Well again you chose to ignore the fact that I stated I have already decided, to and have, renewed my DAN insurance. That does not mean that there are not issues that can be discussed. Your snide remarks "(though I doubt it because then you'd just pony up the $70)" " If you're looking for someone to tell you it's a good idea to risk financial devastation to save $70 per year, you probably won't find it here" are a poor substitute for informative discourse.
Thank you for your time in replying to the post. There was a good point in there.

What he said WAS relevant.

He pointed out that it costs thousands of bucks if you have such an incident.

His comment about you just paying the money wasn't snide, but true.

He then pointed out that only you know what insurance coverage you already have. If you have insurance coverage or you're independently wealthly, then you have the support you need already. Otherwise, the costs are high. you decide.

Yeah, I got that you already decided. There are no issues beyond what risk you're comfortable with. We told you what our concerns are. So you're done.

It's not just covering the costs you incurr.
DAN have the knowledge so when it all goes pear shaped they know what to do. The average normal insurer just doesn't have this specialist knowledge. It is your life and your future health that is on the line here.
And remember that diving within tables/computer is no protection against DCI. In fact most hits are caused by dehydration of people who are well within ND limits. Other causes are bruises that restrict circulation and exercise or hot shower within 4 hours after dive.
Take care out there.
