Am I to understand that the $99 I paid today ONLY covers the evac, and not the actual treatment?

Do I have to buy the additional coverage through them to get comprehensive treatment at a chamber or hospital?

H2Andy:
your $99 is the membership fee and it covers Travel Assist. it covers up to $100,000 of evacuation assistance *IF* you are more than 50 miles from home

So basically that $99 covers getting you to the chamber, but not the actual chamber procedure?

when you pay $99, you have only purchased the basic membership. part of the
basic membership is Travel Assist.

Travel Assist covers up to $100,000 in evacuation costs to get you from a location
more than 50 miles from your home back to your home or local hospital. it covers
both diving and non-diving emergencies.

they won't take you to the nearest hospital or chamber. that's not what it covers. it's there to get you back to your home town if you need emergency evactuation due to illness (diving or non-diving).

for example, if you are in Bonaire, it won't cover an evac to the nearest chamber. it will only cover evacuation to your home town from Bonaire. it's meant to get you back home due to diving or non-diving illness.

if you want coverage for them to pay for the evac to the nearest chamber
and cover chamber treatment, you need one of the dive insurance plans.

(this is without a doubt the single most confusing issue in DAN coverage)

I thought memberships are 29$ (individual) or 44$ (family)?

If it is an individual membership then 99$ = 29$ membership + 70$ preferred plan?

I spoke to the man in charge of the hyperbaric chamber in the Philippines

He said the yearly insurance is only like $75.00 for everything, i dont know if that is dan or not.

Helicopter, and threatment

The 99.00 covers it all it is a 20.00 or 25.00 to join DAN (at least here in the US) That does not give you any insurance or anything then their top insurance plan is 70 something dollars which covers everything from what I was told. Mine came out to 99.00 for the dan membership and their top insurance package for the full year.

I ended up immediately cancelling my DAN membership and joining DiveAssure. Far, far more coverage for less money. They give instructor discounts, as well.

I felt bait-and-switched by DAN. The main issue with a dive-related injury is the cost of the procedure, not the flight back to Massachusetts. DiveAssure's top-tier plan is as comprehensive as it gets.

Just to clarify, I don't mean to start a DAN-vs.DiveAssure thread here at all. Thanks again for the info.

oh yeah... dang ... for some reason i thought basic membership is $99

so... yes... if he's paying $99, that means he's got both the basic membership
and the preferred plan

i'm sorry you felt bait and switched. this was probably my fault, as i thought
the $99 only covered the basic membership.

i checked my statement, and $99 covers basic membership and the preferred plan

i don't think you should characterize it as a "bait and switch." sounds like
you were not clear what you were buying in the first place. that's not really
DAN's fault.

i still don't think you understand what DAN actually covers.

Hmmm, that raises an interesting question: What constitutes the best comprehensive coverage? Obviously, the more coverage, the more expensive the insurance will be.

What's BEST? (add to the list)
=Comprehensive coverage for dive/non-dive related injury or illness.
=All medical expenses paid by Insurance for injury/illness.
=Equipement replacement cost for lost gear due to emergency ditching (not theft)
=Transportation (Evac & non-emergency) to medical facility and back home after treatment.
=Hotel/hospital stay due to extended treatment.
=?
