I too am a victim of the self loosening ring, happened when I first changed the battery about 4 years ago. After cleaning with deionised water and drying the D9 worked fine for another couple of years, and then was put to storage for almost 2 years until recently, when I found it with the battery dead. So, I ordered another kit, changed the battery, but it died again in a week. Changed it again, wishfully thinking it could have been a defective battery, but after a week dead again. So, I'm thinking if there is a possibility of long term oxidation after the first exposure to salty water, and if anything could be done for it.

Also I read it is possible to remove the mechanism from the back, but cannot see how. Any details about that?
