Finer points of the hogarthian rig:

The bungee needs to be shorter than you think. Just long enough so the reg can be put in your mouth and the bungee isn't uncomfortably tight. The hose also needs to be the correct length. ~24inches is good for most folks w/ doubles. Probably shorter with a single tank.

The long hose really needs to be routed under a canister or tucked into the waistband. Routing it under the knife can place the hose too far to the left, interfering with the left dring and the inflator, and could be trapped by a stage/deco bottle. Any slack in the hose (if you're short, like me) needs to be behind the canister. Otherwise, it bows out and is sloppy, and can interfere with the left dring and inflator.

The chest drings need to be placed properly. This is roughly collarbone level. Too low and you can't get at them easily with the same side hand. Too high and the inflator tends to dangle and flop around.

If your kit is set up right, the backup and inflator are pretty far apart.

dbulmer,

It's your choice on whether you contribute to the board, but maybe someday you might re-consider... if you have insight to offer, then doing some paying it forward is not such a terrible thing, IMHO. I know I've gotten a lot of useful information from the board, along with a certain share of useless crap, of course.

I remember very well Swampy's early posts. They didn't inspire me with much admiration, for sure. But-- maybe there's a glimmer of turning over a new leaf. I don't know that he's done anything that he deserves to be ostracized forever, and if he wants to get on the right path now then I'd say that should be encouraged. He has indicated he's signed on for cavern training. My hope is that it's with a real instructor for the purpose of real instruction, instead of some dirt-cheap amateur who only knows how to sign a card.

.

Kotik,

You're right - it was an overreaction.

Am I missing something here? in the photo he has the short hose to his right post? if it was on his left, where it should be, the second stage wouldnt be hanging down so far?? And the long hose wouldnt be so tight around the neck??

back on the topic of DID,

The DIR hose routing has the lp inflator on the right post. I had a tec instructor tell me once, that you may want to have the lp inflator on the left post. The reason being is that at the start of the dive, if you are dropping down quickly and dumping a lot of gas into your wing while breathing off the right post, you may be demanding too much gas from the right post and cause a free flow.

I can't think of an argument to this point, although he did go on to say that this is mostly an issue with ScubaPro regulators and my Apeks regulators should be fine :)

Very nice illustrative pictures; the different hose colors really show the routing well. I'm not sure diving with an orange baseball cap is DIR though.

Old pics ... I haven't seen Brian in that hat for a few years now ...

If you had split fins, there'd be enough propulsion to slow the descent without recourse on buoyancy control.

and if I filled my wing with all the hot air on this forum I could wreck dive the international space station.

I think you should look at getting a smaller wing
