SJ,

I have stayed at the Plantation Inn several times while at Crystal River. It has a dive shop attached to the inn, and a pro shop if you are a golfer also.

Unfortunately, I was there during the manatee vacation season and they were not around, but we rented a small boat from the dive shop and explored several of the springs there.

It is best to go out early as many others have said, since dive schools use some of the springs as training sites and they can become silted later in the day. My wife and I left at daybreak and we had no problems.

The PIs dive shop gave us a little map that showed where the springs were located at, and I imagine that during manatee season, they will just point you to the areas that you can find them in.

I would highly recommend the PI to you, but travelling with little kids it might be better to rent a house like you were suggesting. Just my two cents on the Inn, cant really give advice on the manatees.
