As far as reason and logic being our moral guide, who taught you?
Initially, my parents, but later I studied ethics fairly extensively in college and generally just carefully consider the consequences of my actions as best as I can, using the concept of avoiding harm to others as my primary guide.

I think that some basic social behaviors are innate as a result of evolution (avoid killing members of your own species, for example), but many are learned behaviors.
I think having written lessons about what has been learned as far as how to function as a peaceful society is a good thing. What you're implying is that you have nothing to learn from your elders. ?? At least that's what I gather from your statement.
The problem is, they aren't lessons. They are instructions "Don't do this because God will smite you" type of thing. That only works on the lowest common denominator. Most people need to understand *why* they shouldn't do these things. The only way to do this is to understand how to reason. Frankly, I think ethics and logic should be classes required at the high school level.
