Crap!! Andy, you riling up the unbelievers, again?

Congratulations at reaching 21,000 posts. Did the last 1,000 posts get posted in little less than a month?

i don't know, i don't keep track of my posts

only sailors and losers keep track of their posts

:eyebrow:

H2Andy:
lol

it can be seen to be describing a lot

but does it say the Earth is round? no

please provide me with a verse that says that. until then, no dice

(there are at least two verses i can think of that do a good job of proving your point. but i'm not going to cite them for you. do your legwork, learn your Bible, and get your arguments together before trying to discuss these issues)

(you also need to account for the fact that ancient Babylonian and Summerian "science" held that the Earth was flat and round, like a tortilla -- only larger -- the Bible reflects this belief, also reflected by the Egyptians... basically that was "state of the art" knowledge back then)

I'll just use the King James Version since most people seem to be familiar with that version, and give you the scripture you are begging for... Isaiah 40:22 "It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:"

It does seem to say that the earth is r-o-u-n-d, does it not? Although Isaiah does not specifically say that the earth is a sphere, he doesn't say that it's flat or a stupid tortilla either. Take that, Confucius boy:D

I still think the bible references the earth as being flat and in shape of a circle - as in tortilla. Circle is a 2d, while a sphere is a 3d object. But, it might be viewed both ways.

Still, even if the Earth was described as being round, it wouldn't have any significance. The knowledge of the round Earth was already there. Meet Eratosthenes. And it happened in Egypt, of all places.

Anyone catch this? Always interesting that the deeper we research, the more wild and wacky "life" turns out to be and how often it doesn't quite turn out as predicted.

The key questions answered

What have scientists discovered today?

They have found that each of us is more different genetically than we previously believed. Instead of being 99.9 per cent identical, it may turn out to be more like 99 per cent identical - enough of a difference to explain many variations in human traits. Instead of having just two copies of every gene - one from each parent - we have some genes that are multiplied several times. Furthermore these "multiple copy numbers" differ from one person to another, which could explain human physical and even mental variation.

Why does this matter?

One practical benefit is that it could lead to a new understanding of some of the most difficult, incurable diseases. Although it adds an extra layer of complexity to our understanding of the human genome, the discovery could lead eventually to new insights and medical treatments of conditions ranging from childhood disorders to senile dementia. Scientists are predicting for instance that the knowledge could lead to new diagnostic tests for such diseases as cancer.

How was this discovery made?

Scientists have developed sophisticated methods of analysing large segments of DNA over recent years. "In some ways the methods we have used are 'molecular microscopes', which have transformed the techniques used since the foundation of clinical genetics where researchers used microscopes to look for visible deletions and rearrangements in chromosomes," explained Nigel Carter of the Sanger Institute in Cambridge.

What genes are copied many times and why?

There are just under 30,000 genes in the human genome, which consists of about 3 billion "letters" of the DNA code. The scientists found that more than 10 per cent of these genes appear to be multiplied in the 270 people who took part in the study. They do not know why some genes are copied and some are not. One gene, called CCL3L1, which is copied many times in people of African descent, appears to confer resistance to HIV. Another gene involved in making a blood protein is copied many times in people from south-east Asia and seems to help against malaria. Other research has shown that variation in the number of copies of some genes is involved in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

Are there any other practical applications?

The scientists looked at people from three broad racial groups - African, Asian and European. Although there was an underlying similarity in terms of how common it was for genes to be copied, there were enough racial differences to assign every person bar one to their correct ethnic origin. This might help forensic scientists wishing to know more about the race of a suspect.

Who made the discovery and where can we read more about it?

Scientists from 13 research centres were involved, including Britain's Sanger Institute in Cambridge, which also took a lead role in deciphering the human genome. The research is published in Nature, Nature Genetics and Genome Research.

of course it does. haven't you read our discussion just recently on this thread?

i already admitted the Bible says the Earth is round.... round and flat, as in a tortilla, since that is what the Babylonians, Summerians, and Egyptians already belived.

my challenge was: find me a verse that says the Earth is a sphere

it's not there. they didn't know that.

(did you read my revious posts? i honestly tried to address the issue fairly)

Wow, guy goes away for 5 days, comes back, and there's nearly 100 more pages of stuff. My apologies for not answering any replies to my last post - I simply don't have time to wade through and find everything.

On that note, anyone notice the "search thread" feature isn't so hot? I searched for my name, and while many things came up I was unable to jump directly to the post's I made; rather it just jumped to post #1 of this thread.

Am I missing something?

Truce....no bible thumpers or atheist flag wavers on bloody thanksgivving...grrr

So...how was the turkey? or Tofurkey for our vegetarian divers?

My brother brought his turkey fryer down, and fried one up. I have officially given up on turkey, it is an accursed meat, fit only for the lowest of dogs, and starving cats.

Ham, however, is truly the meat of kings. I could eat another pound, I think. And the apple pie was worth fighting a small war for.
