I spent 2 days diving in Cozumel in January and a week in June and thought I would give my impressions:

January: Stayed at El Presidente. Had a package deal with my Continental Airfare for the room, so it worked out cheap for the quality of the accommodations. The hotel was very elegant (marble floors in all the rooms and bathrooms); and the staff very nice and ultra-accommodating. Definitely the nicest hotel in Coz, from what I hear, but probably also the priciest. Only did 2 days of diving, as I was just coming a couple of days early for a meeting I had in Cancun. We used ScubaDo, the dive operation connected with the hotel. They were great! The boats only had about 5 people on them each time plus a divemaster and 1-2 crewmembers. The divemasters were very safety conscious and very aware of the situations of each of the divers and took us to good spots. Only one complaint about the accommodations at El Presidente -- the beds were very hard -- basically mattresses placed directly on elevated slabs of marble and concrete!

Oops -- have to go to dinner. Will fill you in on our June trip in next post.

Sorta felt like when I finished the "Fellowship of the Ring." Waiting for the "rest of the story!"

Hi DivingDoc,

I've stayed at over a dozen hotels on Coz in my nearly 20 years of diving there, and every one had very hard beds. Can't escape it even at the Presidente.

Did you eat at Arricefes upstairs?

Best regards.

this seems to be a big complaint from people who visit Mexico
personally it has never been a problem for me but I think it has to do with most hotels using cement slabs under the mattress instead of a box spring

figured out the reason the beds were hard. last time I was at Casa Del Mar, bed broke. carpenter came up, took thing apart. Under the mattress there was no box spring only a wooden frame on concrete holding the mattress. no wonder its hard

The only way to miss out on those wonderful hard beds in Coz is to rent a condo or a villa. Most all will have regulars beds with box springs........at least this is what we have experienced.
