I was just wondering if anyone has a hotel recommendation. Also is there better diving, ( I know, all diving is good diving) on the North end or the South end.

Looking to go around October 17th and hoping to escape the tail end of Hurricane season.

We need a little more information about what you might be looking for before a recommendation for a hotel can be made. First, do you want AI or not? On the beach or not? How many in your party? Kitchenette preferred? Swimming pool necessary? Budget?

The best diving is south of San Miguel, the main town (of 2!) in Cozumel.

Trivia quiz: who can name the other "town" of Cozumel? Locals keep mum please.

Depends on what you're looking for? AI? Luxury or Dive Centered? Personally I prefer Caribe Blu.

Most of the diving is on the south end. North end is advanced and very condition dependant.

At that time of year all of your diving will be on the South end. Most dive ops only hit the North end when it's Eagle Ray season (Dec. - Feb.?).

Obviously price will play a factor. I almost always stay at The Presidente ($200ish a night and up) but this coming trip will be spent at Caribe Blu ($60ish).

I suggest you look through the trip reports to get a flavor for the hotels. Opinions are varied on where to stay, and as the saying goes "... everybody's got one.".

As others have said, a lot depends on what you want in a hotel. My favorite is Fiesta Americana. It is a bit south of San Miguel, but has a dock for boats to pick you up and then it is a shorter trip to the dive sites.

A lot of the dive ops don't even go to the north end of the island unless it's a private charter from what I understand. Too far to motor up there when most divers are staying south of town and the diving south is much more consistant as far as conditions go.

as far as hotels, your going to get as many opinions as there are people here, like Jeff said, the Presidente is very nice and the price is what you would pay for staying at an all-inclusive even though they are not one, but it is one of the nicest resorts on the island.

The best AI I have found is the Occidental Grand, really nice grounds and rooms, excellent food. the draw back is it is WAY south and the cab fare to town is around $17 one way. Thay are also still currently closed due to Emily and I think scheduled to re-open in Nov.??

Middle priced places are the El Cid La Cieba (our favorite) & Hotel Cozumel both very nice properties and the HC offers both AI and non-AI pricing.

At the mid-low end of the price spectrum there is Casa Del Mar and older property but very popular with divers, Caribe Blu also no frills, but clean and very popular here on the board. Fiesta American also falls somewhere in here and I think they have both AI and non-AI packages also.

IF you want relaxing and extra peace and quite, there's the Scuba Club, no phones, no tv, but very nice property and folks that stay there just love it. I think they are in the medium price range.

Your first time to Coz it's really hard to decide on a place, you almost just have to narrow it down to what you want to pay and how close you want to be to town and take the leap of faith. then after your there check out where some of the other
properties are and talk to divers on your boat or folks your run into at restaurants and bars and get their opinion.

Thanks to everyone for their input.

OK. Heres the lowdown.....

Single guy looking for a mid range( 2 - 3 star) All inclusive hotel.
Probably around 90-100 a night??

I was looking at Scuba club, and from the people I've talked to
they said it is a pretty good hotel , then I found out the rooms
dont have TV's; Major points deducted.

I was looking at El Cozumenlo.... any comments.

This is a First trip For me ,... so I have no idea what to look for
or how to compare what to what.

On the beach. and something that wasnt too severly damaged by Emily.
I've read where hotels are still closed due to the damage they got.

Im thinking something sorta close to the middle of the island, that way IF
I decide i want to go into town,... I hope Im pretty close.

Also,... how can I / should I book, travel agent, Expedia/Orbits, or direct with
the Hotel.

Thanks

Be carefull with that. What would be considered 5 star in MX would be a 3 star in the US at best.

Then you should look at Caribe Blu. I've stayed at both. Both are dive oriented with on site shore diving. Both are just far enough out of town to make it a slight pain. Both have onsite ops that cater to more experienced divers (i.e. no babysitting) After that they diverge greatly. SCC is food inclusive, not all inclusive. The food sucks compaired to in town dining so IMHO that is not a feature. Caribe Blu has real beds with a matress and box springs. SCC has straw mats on concrete. SCC has a variety of boat types from Cattle to fast. Caribe Blu is all fast boats. Caribe Blu has big clean rooms, all overlooking the ocean. SCC has a variety of room types, not so clean and many don't have ocean views.

The beaches are either far south or far north. Far south took heavy hurricane damage. Far north makes diving a real PITA.

As a single you might want to consider staying in-town. Out of town, even SCC and Caribe Blu can be quiet at night.

Assuming you can get decent plane fare without a package deal, I find booking direct to be the best method.

***** Update*****

Just read some Great Reviews on Casa Mexicana.

Any thoughts. I got a brochure ( Funjet Vacations) and they say that
its All Inclusive. When i go to the Web Site, it says nothing about being
all inclusive. Any one got any comments?

If i do stay here the Scuba Dive site is Aqua Safari; anyone dove with them?
