First post here!

Going to Cozumel with my girlfriend(who is already OW cert, but only has a few dives under her belt) in April and I will be doing my OWD referral with Scubamau and we will be staying at the Occidental. Going down there for 7 days and this really should be a blast! So far my pool work/book work has been fairly easy for me since I am a slalom waterskier and am at home in the water!Been in the area before(Cancun a few times for waterskiing) but never to Cozumel.

I am sure this has been asked a million times before but I was wondering if there are any restaurants close to the Occidental that are any good. Is there anything within walking distance? I here the Occ is fairly remote, exactly how remote...lol?

Regards,

Chris:cool2:

Another addict, muhwaahahahahahahaha!
oops did I use my outside voice.:D
You will have a blast is right. I dove yesterday on a Scubamau boat with a couple that where new also. His first ocean dive since his cert from a quarry. She has about 10 Ocean dives. I kinda remember him saying it was like science fiction down there for him. The best description ever!!
She just loved it too.
My wife is here tomorrow, yeh, and she is getting her cert too! She finished her pool time in Edmonton, did another couple pool dives after and is ready to do the real McCoy now. We use Scubamau too.
Occidental is south, too far to walk. Cab are about 10$ into town to the great restaurants. If you want to rent a car email Margarita at ISIS car rental. A very reliable lady and they will pick you up to get it.
I hope this helps a bit. Have too much fun!!

Don't know where the Occidental is, but two restaurants I highly recommend are Casa Mission and La Choza. Incredible food!

Bad news is there is nothing close to the Grand that you would want to visit. Good news is that the restaurants at the Grand are pretty good. Besides the regular restaurant and the two specialty restaurants included in the AI price, they have an addition up-scale restaurant that will cost extra but is quite good if you want something special. Or a taxi to town will run about $15 each way and offers lots of choices.

We stay at the Grand at least once a year and rarely leave the resort except in a boat.

Enjoy

In actual fact there is one restaurant a bit south of the Grand called Alberto's, (it's right on the beach) and it serves good seafood, but you have to be careful because they have at times overcharged especially for Lobster tail. There are also restaurant to the north that are a part of the different beach clubs, but even the closest is a bit of a walk.

Alberto's on the beach had great fresh seafood plus decent beer which you cannot get at the Grand, don't expect fine dining but the food was awesome, reasonably priced and the flavor was way more local than the resturants at the Grand. Despite having all inclusive we happily walked the 1/3rd mile down the beach to pay for Negro Modelos. FWIW, if you haven't already made your reservations I'd put in my vote for finding somewhere else to stay. Our trip to the Occidental was filled with more drunken morons than the last fraternity party I went to 18 years ago. I wouldn't wish the experience of watching a fat drunk man strip to his boxers in the bar and sing "God Bless America" standing on a table on my worst enemy. Some people like the Occidental but then again some people like sticking needles in their eyes too.

Are you talking about the Grand or the Allegro - they both shared the first name Occidental for a long time? I have seen some pretty wild behavior at the Allegro on a number of occasions but never at the Grand. And the restaurants at the two are in entirely different classes.
