I am thinking about planning a trip down to cozumel for my dive club that i started at my high school. The best time for me is in august but i've seen that august is during the hurricane season. Does cozumel get hit by hurricanes often? Is it worth it to plan a trip there during August? Any recommendations for places to stay with a group that offer unlimited shore diving and/or are pretty cheap?

Go Google Wilma and Cozumel...they can get hit hard from time to time ;)

2 big ones last year alone, one of which sat on the island for 60 hours as a Category 5. It'll be showing signs of Wilma for a looong time.

For shore diving, you want to go somewhere else. The stuff close in to shore in Cozumel isn't very impressive. The boat diving is spectacular, though. Look for a package with a resort or buy a package through a boat op recommended here. I'd try Blue XT Sea. They are awesome.

Have fun! :D
