As you may know, the major issue that will determine the availability of lodging and diving in Cozumel is that of electrical power. Without that virtually no dive shop will be able to take you out, nor will hotels be able to provide any kind of services.

The CFE ( Mexico's National Electrical service) crews have been working night and day and are making incredible progress, just as I supposed they would. As of Sunday evening more than 60% of the Island is powered up, including our office and much of downtown.

It was announced that 90% of the Island will be powered up in this coming week and I presume that means most of the Northern Hotel Zone, Downtown, and Down to the southern edge of town. Of course there may be glitches but so far we are very pleased and more optimistic everyday.

Thanks for the update Dave.

Personally, I'm hoping that Caribe Blue will be back in service by Dec. 18. What do you think are the chances of that happening?

I just can't offer an opinion on that. We have seen that virtually all waterfront hotels have damage, some seemingly catastrophic, but they all have different plans for recovery. Some, all with similar apearing damage, have posted Feb-Mar 2006 opening dates, some for November 15th this year! Is it wishful thinking, is it posturing for insurance companies, is it luck...I just don't know.

But I can make a guess. That is, virtually any hotel that can have power and a dry room will be "open" for the Christmas Season. You see without that high season income many businesses will just have to close down and go away.

But there are alot of hotels that have suffered minimal damage and you should not have a problem finding alternative accomodations for now.
