While I am not a fan of the Resort Scuba Course or the Discover Scuba. You might check with the cruise line about going that way. I regularly dive with Blue Angel in Coz. but I have no idea about if they offer such a thing there or not. Welcome to Blue Angel Resort

I believe he's refering to your lack of PADI certification. Since you say you have dove with your son a couple times the assumption is you did a Discover Scuba course only, something likely offered on your ship or at a resort.

Check out the shops listed at Scuba Diving Cozumel - Dive Shops, Dive Operators, Cozumel Hotels, Cozumel Restaurants, Cozumel Reefs
Make sure to note to any shop that your lack certification what exactly your interested in doing.

Get certfied here in the State's first. Heard not soo good things from differnt people about how things are run else where, There was also a thread just posted about someone having a DCS issue which was brought on cause of a couple different things but still something in my opinon the instructor should have intervined in on.

Getting certified here in the states shouldn;t cost that much money wise and it's something you will always have never have to renew. It's actually not too expensive if you look around. I got myself and G/F certified for 500.00. I am sure you could find a deal like that in your area or maybe even a few dollars cheaper. And that price was from one the Best training shops IMO in my area,.
