Getting from LAX to Cozumel or Cancun is pretty much the same price for the most part. I see very few nonstop flights from LAX to Cancun and then they arrive late in the afternoon or evening. Any tips on who flies nonstop from Los Angeles to Cancun and arriving by early afternoon.
We have only done the bag drag once out of 8 times to COZ. It was not that bad, actually nice and comfortable on the bus, customs took longer than COZ. The ferry was pleasant enough with entertainment, but a warning that inside the cabin is cold as the north pole.

With over 20 years of frequent flights toward Cozumel (many from LAX) I would always prefer a non stop into Cancun over a plane change…no matter the cost. Thunder Storms, Ice storms, broken planes or any delay can all make you miss the once daily connection into Cozumel—in which case you are going to Cancun anyway.

PS It is my recollection that you will always get to Cozumel faster on a Cancun non stop, than with a plane change with associated risks.

You may get to Cancun if your airline knows about and offers the option. On one trip I was flying Delta to CZM via ATL. Mechanical delays at my starting airport finally made making the one ATL to CZM flight impossible.

I changed airlines and flew to CUN via DFW or IAH. I got into Cozumel a few hours later than planned but did not lose a day of diving had I insisted on flying into CZM on Delta.

Check into flying into Cozumel and leaving from Cancun.

I would never dive Chac Mool again or recommend it. The halocline mixing mad it like swimming in a water/vinegar/oil mixture.

I get it. However, from my part of the world there are no non-stops to Cancun, either, unless I drive an an extra couple of hours to Boston. For some, the realistic choice is between a connecting flight to Cancun or a connecting flight to Cozumel.
