Has anyone been to Haigh Quarry, in Kankakee, IL lately? What was the viz and temp (various depths) like? Hubby and I are thinking about coming up that way (Sept 24), and maybe getting in a couple of dives.

Any info is helpful and appreciated.

Viz has been great all year.....there is a sulfer layer forming now....have run into it at about 50 ft. Temps on the shallow side in the upper 70's.....and below 40 ft...in the 50's.

I have been diving there for 3 years...and this is the best I have seen it. I am going there this afternoon!

The viz has been exceptional recentlysome places as much as 20 ft. I agree on the temps. When you know what day you'll be out there let me know. I'll try to look you up.

I was there a few week s ago in late Aug and the temp s were in the 70 s and 62 degrees at 50. Vis has been a good 15 to 20 ft. Are you going to be playing your underwater UNO game ????? Tina the lady who run s thing s there will be real helpful once you get there and have any questions about the Quarry and about good places to stay and eat in town. Hey have a great time.

I heard there was some sort of treasure hunt coming up at the end of Sept at Haigh quarry. Can anyone tell me what goes on at one of these outings? Thanks in advance.

Why don't you consider heading up to Gilboa on 9/24 instead for the Great Lakes Wreaking Crew M&G? There will be a bunch of us there that Sunday. Are you heading up to the northern IL area for something else? Gilboa and Haigh are about the same distance from Indy give or take. Haigh around 2:45 or so and Gilboa around 3:15 or so.

DH,

I have been wanting to check out Haigh quarry for quite some time now and recently found that I pass by it when driving to Montgomery Il for work. I have a friend that works as a commercial diver for Lindal marine in Gary that I want to visit, plus the quarry in Logansport is having their big shin dig on Sunday. I just thought I would kill three birds with one stone. Timing is the big thing. I have a friend that wreck dives with Diver Brian, Indy Scott, Aqualvr and myself that can't make Gilboa on the 23d so we have decided to go the following weekend so she to can join us. I am going to give the other two quarries a try on the 23/24th. I was at the spring M&G and had a blast.

I would like to edit my last post. I found out the treasure hunt was at the quarry in Logansport not Haigh...

have fun at the M&G.

Makes sense. Just wanted to make sure you knew about the M&G. I like Haigh a great deal. Right up there with Gilboa as the best Midwest dive quarries in my book. Enjoy.

I was also at the spring M&G but I'm not sure I had a chance to meet you. Maybe next spring.

Actually, we were kicking around the possibility of 3 different places... Gilboa, Haigh, or France Park... where the treasure hunt will be.

Then I realized that I'll have to pick my parents up from the airport really late the night before (they're getting home from a dive vacation in Roatan)... so we won't be able to come up, spend the night, then pick the kids up (from other grandparents in N. Indiana), and head home.

Instead, I think we're gonna have to do the closer trip to France Park, in Logansport... and it's already pretty close to the "meeting place" to pick the kids up. (We meet Rod's mom and dad half way...close to Grissom Air Base.... beats a 3 hr drive each way!)

We'll have to go to Haigh and Gilboa some other time. I'll sure miss the M&G. Maybe we can make it in the Spring.
