Christian walks away from his Marineland lesson. :)
Glad you got a picture of me coming back from my roll on the beach!

2 out of the 3 divers on the team got slammed and injured. The third was only 10 feet ahead of the 2 that got nailed and the wave never reached him.

I remember telling someone at the bottom of the hill to go look for and help Steve, who got washed into the cave by the wave and had his ankle badly twisted. I told everyone that I needed to head back up to the parking lot while my body was still in shock and could not feel anything. The pain came slowly and the finger hurt for the better part of the following year.

I'd like to say that I somehow learned something from this experience, but we were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time and had no way of knowing since they were just a couple of rogue waves.

At least I got a good story out of it! :D

There are suprisingly few orthopedic injuries in diving. I have a lot of respect for wave energy. Maybe a useful and feasible improvement for marineland would be some kind of call box near the beach. Various types are available that are battery powered. I had put one in near a community pool - same idea.

This was the day I met my fiancee Merry. That's her in the yellow fins. :)

That large rectangular rock that they are working around in those pictures is the one that I got slammed into and broke my finger between the rock and my face.

I think the reason Marineland closed was it was simply too remote. Amusement parks generally need to have freeway access and lots of land to be successful. The remoteness is also the reason that I would not worry too much about improvements brining in hordes of divers. It is still a long drive from most locations and a long walk down and back up from the beach. As was pointed out, concrete stairs (or even a ramp) at the beach isn't going to help much when you get caught by a wave. It then becomes just one more thing to get slammed into.

Holy crap, that looks crazy! I don't know if I've ever been there with that much ground exposed. I hope she wasn't badly injured!

Just her pride. Ted Sharshan broke a finger there a year ago this week in pretty calm conditions. He slipped during his exit and put his hands down to protect himself the same way Headhunter did. I've been very fortunate. I've been flipped over 180 degrees at the point and swept into the cave by an eight foot wall of gravel and never got hurt badly. I have torn up three drysuits there, though.

And Jean tore up her ACL there, requiring surgery for repair.
And some evil darling we know and love cracked a rib there, as I recall hearing.

The list goes on.

Marineland has teeth and sometimes it bites ya. :007:

I have a neat little toof'-shaped stone I picked up from Cobble Beach one day (when Ken and I were just walking the shore, having thumbed the dive due to raging conditions :D ) That chomper sits next to my alarm clock. It reminds me to be reasonable there... every single time.
