Mike, I'm sorry...I just noticed you were asking me to compare the Savant with the Vyper not the Stinger.

I like the Savant better (I've used both) because of the large numbers and layout. The Vyper doesn't have a stopwatch either.

BTW: Stingers = ^ $

My opinion only and it is suspect because I have one for sale....
But I would say the same things even if I didn't.

That's interesting about the similiarites between the Suunto and your planner. But did you run the planner for 60 minutes at 130'? I bet they would really pull apart on that.

I read somewhere a while back that JJ was spotted with a Vyper on his wrist. :) Probably in gauge mode no doubt.

About the Status, you're probably right about it not having a gauge mode. It was just one that came to mind that didn't lock out and is supposidly pretty good for deco diving.

I know absolutely nothing about the Savant, but can tell you the Vyper's display is straight foward and easy to read. There is a few things I don't like about though. For one, it has a shield over the computer and water beads up behind this sheild making it difficult to read on the surface, after it's been wet. But it's fine after you submerge it. Another thing is that it's a pain to read on night dives. Shining a light on it usually just creates a glare and makes it hard to read, unless you get the angle of the light just right. Now it does have a great backlight that makes it very easy to read, but the trouble is that you have to push the mode button to activate it, then it only stays on for a few seconds. You can adjust how long it stays on though, so it's not a big deal. Just one of those things to complain about I guess.

Now where are you vacationing? Everywhere I've ever been that's one of the first things out of the captain's mouth, "No deco diving!!". Course I've yet to have anyone say anything to me if I stayed down a bit long. :)

Uncle Pug reminded me about my Vyper's band. Like him, I think it's safer to change those bands out. The Vyper uses the watch type pins on it's band, if one of those comes free then there goes the computer. What I did was bought one of the velcro watch bands. The band goes all the way under the computer and through the housing making a complete loop. With it the only way you can loose the computer is if it either comes out of the housing or the velcro comes lose. Neither of which is likely.

UP,

Thanks again. Yeah, the stop watch isn't something we use either. Deco isn't an exact science, so I don't worry about it too much. Give or take a minute or two isn't a big deal if you're doing everything else right. I'm really leaning towards the Vyper for it's bigger display right now.

Warhammer,

Does that protective cover come off easily so you can read the screen on the surface?

I'm planning on a vacation to the Bahamas this Spring. I always look forward to relaxing diving in the warmer climates without all the tech junk. I really have to grin and bare when I'm on a charter boat about everything. My type of deco diving is a 1000% safer than the recreational diving done on those charters. Don't even get me wound up about some charter companies. :)

My planner shows an air dive to 100' for 60mins on air as 132mins to surface with deep stops starting at 80'. If you deco out with 50% and O2 (just for fun) that time is reduced to 46mins.

Take care.

Mike

PS. Thanks for letting me know about the wrist band. I'm surprised my Pro hasn't busted yet. It should one of these days, it's only 10yrs old.

Well it just snaps in/out of place, so yeah I guess you could do that. You could leave it off altogther but it suits it's purpose of protecting the computers glass rather well, so I wouldn't. But it's not that big of deal. You can still read it on the surface, you may just have to shake it a little or read around the droplet of water under it. It's one of those things that you can live with, but rather not have to deal with, if you know what I mean.

LOL!! Ok, just wandering if maybe you'd found one that was more understanding to your way of diving. The trouble seems to be that most are just set to the "vacation" diver and everyone else just has to go along.

Is it confirmed then that these computers from DiveInn are indeed metric switchable?

It appears they are at least the Mosquito is.

Always want to be sure...

Just for the record, the Mares M1 computer also has a guage mode.

Some quick facts:

Depth rated to 490' (who's with me!? :D)
Metric or imperial modes
Nitrox
Stores 50 dives
Downloadable to PC

Suggested retail: $409

Take care.

Mike

LY,

The new Oceanic "Versa Pro" has a gauge mode. I've just glanced at the unit in the shop but haven't had a chance to play with it. It DOES go to 399ft in gauge mode, which I was surprised at.

One thing that makes it interesting is that it says you can program appearance of the display -- for instance you can tell it (in computer mode) to display time and depth, or time remaining and depth, or whatever. I think you can also tell it what you want in big numbers and what you want in small numbers.

So you can make absolutely sure your buddy has no idea what he’s looking at if he glances at your gauge. :)

Of course when I asked about what you can change display-wise in gauge mode, the guy behind the counter said, “What’s gauge mode?” So I need to go back and get the manual and sit down with it.

I guess one advantage of the fashion tek movement is that all of a sudden we have a bunch of options for BTs! :)
