Completed OW where next...

OK, I've completed OW past weekend and would like to complete AOW by end of October (I think it is doable) before my trip to Thailand so I can be more experienced and get more out of the dives there.

So here is my thought.

1. EANx (I already signed for my next class), this will count as a specialty towards master diver as well as towards AOW, right?

2. Equipment (I am a techie at heart and want to know how things work etc.) Again I think this counts as a specialty towards MD as well as towards AOW, right?



I think underwater navigation and deep diving are mandatory for AOW but I think for the later you need to be adventure diver first. So I am confused as I thought you can take deep diving training that counts towards both AOW and adventure diver at the same time. Does it mean I need to take all 5 adventure dives to get my adventure diver first before I can complete deep diver specialty? Or can I have deep diver specialty course done before I take all 5 different adventure dives?

The last one I want to add is night diving one. This should get me 5 mandatory to get there.

Depends on which agency you're wanting to get the training under. Although they are mostly very similar, there can be some differences. You should take the courses in which you are interested in & that will help you to achieve your diving goals. Your instructor &/or LDS should be able to explain to you the path to take to get where you want to go. The one of best things you can do is just dive, have fun & gain experience!:cool2: Good luck in your endeavors.

Adventure dives are a sample of different experiences. (Deep, navigation, peak performance, wreck, search and recovery, altitude....) AOW is basically 5 adventure dives, two of which need to be navigation and deep. Your adventure dives can count towards your AOW and/or the first dive of a speciality. AOW has to be dives so equipment and EANx will not count towards AOW. Master diver involves having five specialities. Those do not have to be dives so EANx and egquipment will count towards your Master Diver Certification.

Just try and get as many dives in as you can before your classes. Nothing beats plain old good diving experience.

As indicated above, AOW is 5 dives with both navigation and deep being two of them. The other three are 'negotiated' between the instuctor and student but since there is likely to be more than one student, they are usually 'dictated'.

My wife and my son-in-law just did PADI AOW and the dives were: navigation, deep, search and recovery, boat and peak performance buoyancy.

Each of these 5 dives could be considered for one of the required dives of the related specialty. I think this is up to the instructor.

No dives required for Nitrox.

I think and hopefully an instructor can confirm, but there are two ways to do your AOW:

1.) Take an AOW course first, get your certificate; then do the specialties after if you want, with the option of skipping the first dive

2.) Do 5 specialty courses with dives, including nav and deep; and get it automatically

While your AOW dives can count as the first dive of a specialty, unless you have the same instructor for all of them, this probably won't be the case.


As for Nitrox, while it doesn't count for your AOW, it is probably a good idea just in case you need Nitrox. If you understood the tables in OW, Nitrox is a breeze.

I heartily recommend choosing the dives that will teach you the most about diving and staying away from the choices that will teach you the least. Choose peak performance buoyancy and night diving for sure. Search and Recovery is good, as is wreck diving. Multilevel can be good with the right instructor. Stay away from choices like Boat diving.

Do Nitrox as a separate specialty, not part of the AOW. You want the certification for sure, but it does not include actual dives.
