I've been thinking recently about looking at getting a backplate and wings setup, although I really know very little about them in general. I haven't yet taken the DIRF course, but I hope to do some in the next while. Given that I plan on this plus most of my diving will be cold water wreck diving in a drysuit, using single steel 80s (and maybe eventually doubles), what should I be looking for? Lift capacity? Type of harness? Any advice would be appreciated.

oh... a fresh convert!

You should be looking at quality and value, luckily, most of the manufacturers out there have the first one covered, the second one varies from person to person.

You should intially buy a wing for single tank diving, you'll find one made specifically for that will work much better than a "dual purpose" (both singles and doubles) wing. Lift compacity should be somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 lbs, then if you decide to move onto doubles buy another wing.

Use a one piece harness if you can, it' the least complicated and safest harness, not to mention the cheapest.

You'll definitely want to go with a SS plate, that and a Steel 80 will greatly reduce the amount of weight on your belt.

Any of the manufacturers out there will do the job for you, they include, but are not limited to: Dive Rite, Halcyon, OMS, Oxycheq, and Abysmal.

Good luck,
Ben

OBG, thanks for the info. Just curious, though, why would a wing made for a single tank be better than a dual purpose wing? I've also been thinking about getting a DUI weight harness to work with this - would there be any concerns in this respect?

Well... take a long at any dual purpose wing, I'll use the Dive Rite Rec Wing for an example, it has bungies on it which are intended to prevent rapid air shifting, which we all can see is BS, think about how much force a small volume of air has under pressure, you'd have to have some pretty strong bungies, also if your bladder gets punctured the bungies add to the force of the air, pushing it out of the wing, lastly it is rated at 51 lbs which is not quite enough for a set of 104s. Also compare the design of a single tank wing (such as the DR Venture) vs. a double tank wing (such as the DR Classic) and you'll see that a dual purpose wing is a hybrid of the two.

I don't see any problem with a DUI weight harness, but I would suggest getting your setup (definitely a SS backplate) and dive it with a weightbelt for a little while and I bet you'll find that with a SS plate, steel tank and possibly some trim weights you'll need very little weight if any and a weight harness would be unnecessary.

You are not going to find a wing that is good for both single tank and doubles... Get a single wing fist such Oxycheq, Halcyon, or OMS (probably in that order) and then move to doubles wing later when eventually you do get doubles, again, Oxycheqs are the hottest thing on the market right now (and no I don't work for Oxycheq).

Thanks for the information. Had a look at the Oxycheq site and the 45 lb single appears to be what to go with, judging from the responses from the other thread.

Any idea if there are any Oxycheq dealers in the Toronto area? Haven't seen them around any shops around here.

First, thanks for the PM

I just want to say to you that there will be no miraculous change in your diving when you go to the BP/W. You won't mysteriously fall into perfect trim, have exceptional buoyancy control and see your SAC rate drop through the floor.

I’m sharing this with you because you should be prepared for the reality check that I realized when I made the switch. From all of the crowing on the board, I half expected a piece of gear to transport me to super diver.

I didn’t really think that – but you get the idea.

Its just gear.

Its solid gear. Its well made gear. Its minimalist and low tech. Its harder to get into. Its less comfy than my fluffy Black Diamond.

The upside: I have less weight on my belt. My cylinder is much more rigidly attached to me. The plate fits closer – nothing sliding around, so I move better with it on underwater than I did with my fluffy, padded BC. You assemble it – this is critical, as it means you know your stuff. I had no idea where some straps went or terminated behind the padding of my other BC. It was loaded with manufacturer installed clips, rings, straps and other stuff I never used.

But its just gear.

What is DID do for me was make me practice more. I needed to break this horse. I wanted to diver with precision and control. I wanted to get this thing working for me. It drove me to actually practice diving. That is what drove the improvement in my skills, not the gear - but the desire to master the gear. I'm still working on it, but I'm getting better.

My change to BP/W was completely independent of my choice to dive DIR. It was a first step, but it wasn’t the trigger event. I’m diving in cold water, steel 130 (used to use hp100) drysuit with 8 pounds on the belt. I use the 36# Halcyon with no worries.

I documented my public humiliation pretty clearly on these pages. Here’s a link to me assembiling this thing when it all arrived. Here's a link to my first dives in my BP/W, and my thoughts.

Its a ride, my friend. You'll dig it.

Mo2vation, I too thought that I didn't notice a drastic change but... guess what... after diving with BP/Wing for a while, last week we went to Bonaire... and for some reason I desided not to tak emy BP/Wing anf pack my old trusted Zeagle instead... damn, was I mad... I couldn't stay horizontal, my bouyancy was all over the place, I could hair the air trapping in the wing (it has small bungees-like thingies).. it was horible... this time, I could definatelly see a drastic change. Next time, I am packing my BackPlate!
