Actually over 80% of commercial divers work inland, there is much more territory to cover.

The closest school is NJ http://www.diversacademy.com/ but there is also a school in Canada you may want to look into, they specialize in ROV training and you may be able to work your way into RI being able to offer multiple talents (computers, ROV, diving)

Of course there is also the military in either an active duty or reserve capacity for diving...
 
While working on the Big Dig, we used divers for several tasks. I know that most of the divers were part of the piledrivers union. I don't know what it takes to get in, but they say the pay is good. I think IUOE Local 25 has divers also.

A few weeks ago we had 2 divers diving in raw sewage, in a 5 foot sewer pipe. So I would be sure you really want to do that type of work before you quit your job.
