I was chatting with my freediving buddy the other day and commented at the 18 lbs of body weight I've lost this year. He told me that is to be expected since the water I've been diving in has been consistently below 40°F and more recently, around the 32 - 36°F mark. He says a study was done using a 175 lb subject and that person's body burned as much as 1200 calories an hour.
