hey, my g/f has been begging me to take her snorkeling, but its too pricy to take my boat across the channel to snorkel the islands, so i was wondering if there was any good snorkeling off a beach in socal? thankyou

God yes, there's good snorkeling. How far are you from La Jolla?
Seal Beach and Goldfish Point are good places to start. Some of the best snorkeling I have ever done, anywhere.

im in san fernando valley, id rather be somewhere farther north than SD.

There are plenty of reefs close to shore from Malibu to Ventura Harbor. There are also some great snorkelling sites along Palos Verdes if you don't mind the climb. Orange County offere very easy snorkelling with easy sandy beach entry to rocky reefs close to shore. For a short list of sites with pix and descriptions, try here.

Los Angeles and Orange county shore snorkeling is okay. On a very good you can have up to 20 feet vis but on average it is only 10 feet.

I would seriously recommend that you go to La Jolla Shores/Cove in San Diego. It is phenomenal. There is a section that is literally just covered with sandsharks and leopard sharks. Then the cove has a bunch of lobsters and fish. At the shores you have the submarine canyon and there is always a lot to see there.

Hi ya

You might try Leo Carrillo , South. It's the rocky shore line directly across from the park entrance. Park on PCH near the Mulholland Hwy. sign and walk down to the beach. There's a small sand beach cove next to the lifeguard tower that over looks the Pointe. Enter there and it's a short swim (South) to the reefs and kelp. Closest thing to Catalina I've found with little work involved. Best snorkeling would be around the boilers (rocks that are above water)and south in front (shore side) of the kelp beds. Average 8-15'. Watch for surfers. Best time for snorkeling would be at peak low tide. Less chance of surfers and surge.
Leo Carrillo also has a little cave tunnel that leads from one cove to the next and tide pools.
