I wonder if it still help prevent a worse case?
I dont know. I made several trips to Ecuador for extended work trips(59 days and 35).

I took the doxocycline as directed without skipping a beat. Maybe I had a slight case of malaria while down there and attributed it to having too many drinks in the casino the night before, or eating something that may have been handled and prepared in conditions not quite as sanitary as back in the US.

Maybe, it kicked in after returning to the states and was mis-diagnosed as something else since malaria really isnt an illness looked for.

My personal doctor was aware of my travels to Ecuador, and at one time, I went to an urgent care center and made them aware of recent travels to Ecuador.

Who knows when I got the malaria exposure.

My wife and I took this with no side effects prior to our trip in June and we just finished off the last dose. Sometimes I think society has forced drug manufacturers to put every conceivable outcome depending on age, diet, health, time of day, weather, which way your hair is combed,...I also did a double take when I read the novel of precautions for Chloroquine! I would not play around with Malaria or Dengue. It may also ease your mind to find out if they spray where you are lodging, but you will get bit, tourist are just too tasty!

On our trip to Roatan my wife had some moderate side effects from Malarone, mostly psychotic (anxiety, vivid dreams, general uneasiness, plus headaches, nausea). I had none. She will not travel anywhere that requires malaria meds anymore- it made her that uncomfortable.

Sounds like my ex

You would think she may be up for trying a different med, Cloroquine you generally start with one a week before the trip, plenty of time to know if they bother you, could probably get a Doc to prescribe one for such test purpose, its pretty cheap as well.
Of course Roatan and many other places do not require any type of anti malarials, they are simply suggested.

Two years ago I used Chloroquine for a trip to Costa Rica. About week 3 or 4 of 7 (after returning home thankfully), I had a pretty bad stomach ache which lasted long enough and was bad enough for me to go to the doctor, which I never do. Just before I went it hit me that it might be from the drug so I told the doctor and he agreed. He put me on Zantac 150 and said keep taking the drug. The Zantacs did the trick, then I was fine.

So this year I used Malarone, for Roatan, with no problems. That will be my drug of choice in the future.

Kindo of just goes along with the whole big bug story, Some are eatup up bad, some are not, Catus juice works for some, not for others, Antimalrial also affect folk different, probably why a lot of this stuf is best left for discussing with a medical professional knowledgabe in travel meds.

Ah, you poor slugs--my lady has been with me for 35 years, and is right by my side on all our dive trips. Who could ask for more?:kiss2: Woody

Just curious--do you people (please chime in) who live on Roatan (or Utila for that matter) regularly take an antimalarial? I was there for six weeks and never heard anyone mention that malaria was a problem. I did take one (I forgot which one) for a while on the mainland but not while I was on Roatan and Utila. Is malaria a problem there among the dive community?
