cdolphin,

Can you tell if the sound is coming from the first or second stage? Can it be reproduced on the surface, or only underwater?

I don't have any real answers, but hopefully someone else reading this thread might....

In your case, the components that were likely changed were the high pressure poppet (Aqualung calls this the HP seat) and all o-rings.... the HP crown and springs were most likely reused... So assuming a correct and competent rebuild procedure (components properly lubed and installed correctly, no damage done to sealing surfaces), I'd start by looking at the "new" parts....

But I wonder if just changing the orientation of the used parts (spings, spring block) when the reg was reassembled could cause a vibration.... and something as simple as flipping a spring or rotating the spring block might stop the noise....

Best wishes.

Thx. The second stage. And I haven't taken it on a dive, it was just serviced and the chattering is topside....I'm a bit nervous to dive it. I guess that's the only way to find out, though.

The LDS owner said it wouldn't do it underwater, he said it is the diaphram. I'm hoping he's right. I'll update after diving it.

Thanks for the info! That's helpful.

cdolphin,

Removing the 2nd stage front cover and changing the orientation (rotating) the 2nd stage diaphragm 90 degreees can sometimes stop (or start!) the sound you are probably describing.

If it is a "honking", "quacking", or, well, "farting" sound coming from the 2nd stage on the surface, that is the diaphragm vibrating/resonating. It is no big deal, about 1/2 of my 2nd stages do this, and I don't even bother trying to correct it. It should go away underwater.

Best wishes.

Yes, I had my reg serviced at BB -- but it was making the noise before I had it serviced, and it began to do it again afterwards.

Both of these regs were new and have not been serviced yet. I brought the Proton ice extreme back to my LDS and was informed that this was a fairly common complaint with this reg and that they would get it fixed. As for they ffm, I contacted the manufacturer and was told to "work on my breathing" whatever the hell that's suppose to mean. I'll try a different first stage on it the next time I use it and let you know if that works

He meant if you stop breathing the noise would stop. It's your fault.:D

None of my other reqs have this problem. I have the Mares MR22/ MR12 a Hollis deco reg and a Apeks Tek3 rig for the twins.

No they're both on different first stages. The Proton is on a MR32 and the FFM is on a Zeagle Flathead 7
