I have a boat but have only done it as a shore dive. It sure seems like it would be easier.

I've done Cat a few times from my boat. It's nice to descend straight down to the "moon" (deepest point at Cat) then work your way up the ledge. The largest lobster I have ever caught was at Cat. The carapace (sp?) was about 2" longer than the max on the gauge. (The largest lobster I have ever seen was underneath the Poling at night).

Anyone on this board who says Cathedral Rocks is easy if you only have 10-15 dives under your belt is knee-jerking and being dishonest. This dive site is never easy. We all love it because it's one of the best dives in the state, though.

"Good conditions" is a relative term at Cathedral. I have been there under multiple scenarios and the bottom line is, if the tide is low, this is a treacherous dive regardless of your experience. I'll take Cathedral at high tide with a slight chop to low tide and flat calm any day of the week. My understanding is that the stone memorial is in honor of a diver who paid for a tough exit with his life.

Regardless of tide, we've all learned to respect the walk down to the water. In the heat of the summer it can be a real bumout.

I'm not trying to scare anyone out of this dive. It's a beautiful dive and easily one of my all-time favorite shore spots. But it requires some forethought and good water-reading beforehand.

Your post has the first occurance of the word "easy" in this thread.

It's a challenging dive, but at the same time lots of people dive it regularly. It's a little tricky, but it's not like climbing Everest or anything.

If the conditions are good, it's well worth the effort. If they aren't, it's usually easy to tell before you bother trying.

hi matt,

i remember that sweeeet dive last summer with you and mer at Cathedral....that was near perfect conditions....

a little tricky at the exit, though....with the little surf that there was at the end....

i guess if it looks questionable, it is questionable....

i'm hoping to head up to Cape Ann this Sunday for a couple of tanks...after all, it is Father's Day.......

I'm planning to go up on sunday too, to show someone new to the area a good site or two. We're meeting at BK at 1 so we can catch the high tide. There's a thread about it on Scuba Stop if you'd like to join us.

Bottom line is it's not a site for brand-new divers or folks who've never done cold-water diving. Not a deathtrap, but definitely a site that needs to be particularly respected.

All this information and all your thoughts are what I was looking for. So thanks to everyone for posting. I'm looking forward to diving there.
