I did this for my AOW with probably all of 10-15 dives under my belt, so it's not too bad when conditions are ok - as long as you're comfortable/in shape and go with someone who knows the ropes. Definitely have some decent practice in surf entries before this.

Does anyone know the story of why a large rock is carved with a diver's name at Cathedral. We saw it and was wondering what the story was behinde the memorial.

All I remember was being told that diver died there, our instructor pointed it out as a "respect the ocean" lesson.

I have pictures looking up & waterline just after high but cannot post. I upload them & save but they always head for neverwhere

*shrug* here's one of mine

The rock on the bottom right is the entry point, I'm standing close to teh end of it. Before the quality is dumbed down for web posting; you could see the splashes from the waves that drenched me right after the photo was taken.

Nice pic Jeff -- man that makes we want to go diving.....;-)

BTW, since people seem interested -- here's a link to someone's pic of the boulder field that you have to hike down to get to the water line. This was posted in the Old Garden thread that started recently. The pic is looking uphill towards where you park from the dive site. Props to Magwitch, who posted the pic.

I have a boat but have only done it as a shore dive. It sure seems like it would be easier.

Perfect picture. That's right about the same place I was standing, but facing the other direction; just the tide is a wee bit lower ;)

I've not; but I know Fred Calhoun [Easy Diver] goes there a lot. Actually a lot of the charters he runs are off of the popular, but crappy access, shore sites.

I was shore diving there late last summer and the Cape Ann Divers big boat dropped anchor about 200-300 yards off shore (never seen that before or since). There were also 2 lobster boats working the area....they obviously weren't happy "getting it from both ends" with divers on shore and on a boat.

Not coincidentally, the Rockport PD showed up shortly thereafter.....

BTW, say what you will about DUI rockboots...I was loving them at Cathedral this past Sunday.....
