Another great day of diving!!

The Sand Dollar leaves from San Pedro at 7am and we were a total of 20 divers on board.
Although the weather was overcast first thing in the morning, by the time we came up from our first dive the sun was out and stayed out the rest of the day. The crossing to Catalina was pretty smooth with very small swells.

Dive 1: Italian Gardens
Vis: 20-25' -- large particles in the water and a little murky but not too bad
Saw a number of giant sea bass, namely one that was quite scuffed up. (note: this was not the work of a spear fisher but looked more like the blades from a boat).

Dive 2 & 3: Red Bluff
The captan did move the boat between the 2 dives, about 100 yards, for those divers that didn't swim over to the caves on the first dive. Basically, we dove the same spot twice.
Vis: 30-40'
Great sea life, kelp forest, horn sharks, and caves. We found the swim through cave on the first dive but it was a tight fit and it is hard to see that it is a swim through as you need to turn right once 2/3 of your body is through the entrance.

Dive 4: never happened
This boat usually does 4 dives but we were told that people took too long getting in first thing in the morning so we didn't "have time" to do another dive. Not sure what this mean as no one was telling us to get in by x time or out by y time.

The return crossing was smooth and since the sun was out, we pleasantly hung out on the deck.

Alexandra- Can you describe the injury you saw on that particular bass? I've been filming and tracking the individuals at Italian Gardens for some time, and often find new injuries every week.

Did it look anything like the individual in this picture?

There are a few others with good sized scars I've filmed, but I don't have their pictures on my web site yet.

Oops, I did have a few others on my web site that I can link to. Here is an individual whose gill cover (operculum) appears to have been torn off (fishing line?).

It is interesting that I see relatively few scars and wounds on the bass in the Avalon area (where boat traffic is heavy but fishing not very common), but at Italian Gardens I see lots of injuries and scarring. Some appears to be from natural feeding behavior, but quite a lot of it is due to human causes (spear wounds, fish hooks in mouths, chunks removed possibly from fishing hooks catching the fish's flesh, etc.). Although boat traffic is much lighter here, fishing is a more frequent activity in the vicinity of this courting site.

Ouch! :11:

Nice pics, Alexandra.

It looks like you were out with a group from Hollywood Divers (judging from the pics of Bill and James).

Sounds like you had a really fun time. Thanks for sharing it with us.

from the hollywood divers web site, it looks like the trip was $130. I have to assume food and air is included. seems a little steep for only 2 dive locations, when I would have expected 4 locations.

I hope your 3 dives were 75 minutes long! At a minimum, they should have told you it was ok to do an extra-long dive on the last dive, since at that point I'm sure they had decided it was only 3 dives.

Sorry, I didn't look at the pictures. I don't believe I've seen that injury yet.

Dr.Bill,
I was with Alexandra when she encountered the BSB with the wounds. What you can not see in the pictures are the slices ( 4 or 5 ) that ran across the fish's back just foward of the tail fin and a large gash high on the left side just aft of the gill plate.

Thanks, James. I'll have to keep an eye out for that one. I've been amazed at the number of significant injuries to the fish in the Italian Gardens area. I've seen a few injured ones in the Dive Park and Lover's Cove, but nowhere near as many and most of the wounds in those sites were minor.
