I've been diving a 3/2mm for the past two months and think 63 F is quite comfie for a dive or two a day (even with bottom temps of 57 F)... but then I have accumulated sufficient bioprene to keep me warm as well. I'm always amused when I read of Florida divers who do not dive year round because it gets too cold! Sheez... try 47 F in a wetsuit (7 mm of course) here. I have a dry suit but it is wetter than my wettest wet suit and therefore I've only used it once. Of course those with less bioprene may get different mileage!

I'm headed down to do three days of hard-core Channel Islands diving, and 63 at the surface sounds positively sublime! Of course, Puget Sound only broke 50 degrees within the last week or so . . .

Same here. I moved back to CA (thank god!) after leaving santa monica and moving to ft. lauderdale. The diving was nice (didn't use my drysuit once!) but I grew very frustrated with the "fair weather" FL diver. The boats stop going out around Labor Day each year, which was BS. After 2 years of that, I could not wait to leave. Can't really do shore walk-ins there. I tried to get my lame "diving" friends to go out in sept & oct & nov, etc, but all I heard was "it's too cold...we'd have to wear one of those wetsuit things." And of course with less than 10 or 12 people, the boats don't even turn the key.

It's lame. FL divers are some of the most fair-weather, coddled, divers I've ever seen. The water is clear all year...what's the problem?

Dove the park yesterday. Poor vis and fairly strong surge. Min temp was 63 F but I only dove to a max depth of 41 ft. I was comfortable in a 3/2mm with hooded vest although your mileage may vary.

A bit off topic, but I have traveled to Key Largo to go diving in the winter a few times. That's a short drive from Ft Lauderdale, where I usually fly into, so I'm not sure why that wasn't an option for you. I'm trying to decide whether to move to So FLA or So CAL (having lived in Santa Monica / Venice in the 60's 70's), and diving is figuring into the equation.

BTW. I found this table to be helpful in determining average water temps.
US NODC Coastal Water Temperature Guide

Did another dive yesterday. Min temp of 63 F at max depth of 50 ft. Other divers were reporting cold water as low as 55 F but I didn't hit any of that.

Driving all the way to Largo to dive was a bit much from northern FTL.

For my money, the only thing viable about the PITA FL living was the diving. That's the ONLY reason to live there. Take out 6 months of the year that the boats won't go out, add in humidity, and I could only take 20 months of it. FL? Don't get me started. UGH.

Sorry about the hi-jack. Back to your regularly scheduled thread. I won't jump in off-topic again, Doc. (PS Did read your OC Diving updates about last weekend in my in box as well.)

Yesterday I have 62 F at max depth of 51 ft

drbill, you're heartier than I am. I would be diving my 5 mm with hooded vest, maybe even my 7 mm with water in the low 60s. I dive my 7 mm with a hooded vest comfortably into the low 50s. I travel to San Diego once or twice a year and get in several dives.

Wow, some pretty harsh comments about SE FL from MrCultureJammer. Glad you were able to return to SoCal. Personally, I love FL, especially Boynton Beach and Jupiter. I've spent a fair amount of time in Key Largo also. I dive there all year round and find plenty of locals to dive with and boats to dive on. To each their own, I'd be happy to spend more time there.

Good diving, Craig
