I am heading to Avalon this Saturday the 24th. I am coming in from out of town visiting my son who does not dive. Was thinking of bringing along my gear sans tank and weights which I assume I can rent there somewhere? Is it easy to hook up with someone who is diving there or is there a protocol of some sort? Wife said she is good just reading a book, shopping or hanging with the son so I am good to go. :D

Getting tanks and weights pose problem @ Catalina/Avalon/Casino. There are several shops closeby and even a truck that has stuff at the dive site. They might even be able to hook you up.

The entry there is easy - they built stairs a few years ago and it's just gorgeous underwater. If you bring some raw green peas you can feed some of the animals who are well-acquainted to being hand fed.

p.s. Dr. Bill who posts great articles here probably has some advice about diving Catalina somewhere.

There's a very informative "sticky" on the SoCal sub-forum of the California Kelp Divers forum.

Personally, I'd pass on feeding the fish. There's no need and it can do harm.

Curious now...how does it do harm aside from probably not being too PC.

I am visiting from out of town and just posted a thread too.
I am planning to dive there this Friday afternoon and can't dive there on Saturday tho.

We would be up for more divers to join us if you want?!?

I'm not doing much daytime diving these days... almost all my dives are at night due to the video project I'm working on.

As has been said, tanks and weights (and air fills) are easy at the dive park or from one of the three shops in town.

As for feeding the fish, it does alter behavior (of the fish and occasionally the divers!). Of course I'd much rather see divers feeding fish prepared food than having them kill sea urchins to feed to the fish. Sea urchins are NOT a problem in the dive park or much of Catalina for that matter.
