Hey guys,
For those of you who have been there. How does it work? I plan on taking the Catalina Express over. After they drop you off, then what? Do i just walk all the way over there and get suited and geared up near the entry point? Where do i put my stuff (ie gear bag and clothes)? thanks
kiet

There's a sticky in the SoCal forum that covers everything you need to know about diving out here. Look for it and if you don't find it, PM me.

BioNerd...if you do not plan on taking some sort of golf cart transport of taxi over to the point...make sure you have some sort of handtruck, dolly, or dive bag on wheels that you can roll on over there, especially if you bring your own tank.

My arms and legs still hurt...lol

Ah, you youngsters! I've walked from Lover's Cove (past the boat terminal) all the way to the dive park in full gear (tank, pony, weight belt, etc) carrying my underwater video equipment. OK, so it did hurt a little the next day...

I took the ferry to the island and a taxi to the dive park. The park is pretty small but does have some nice features. I geared up and left my bags at the top of the concrete stairs. I was trusting.

The park is pretty and full of kelp. That crackling noise always annoys me but it is a fun time.

Are you referring to the crackling sound of the pistol shrimp, or that of the rocks moved around by the surge?

thanks for the reply guys, im a noob, i should have done a search before i started my own thread....eitherway thanks for the super quick replies. Now with alittle more confidence for what i have to do when i get there, i can't wait to dive there this weekend, thanks

Hey Kiet,

I'm a fan of taking a small hand truck, putting a couple of plastic tubs on it filled with gear and then strapping that and a tank across the top to the dolly using one of those ratchet tie downs that people usually use for securing things in the back of a pickup truck. I take an extra ratchet tie down, in case the first one breaks. It hasn't yet, but that would make things much more difficult if it did and I didn't have a backup.

I take that and roll it right on to the Catalina Express and then roll from the boat through the middle of town to the dive park. It's not that far and only takes me about 10 - 15 minutes.

Hey Kiet-

In case you didn't find the sticky, here's a direct link:
http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?t=85342

In a nutshell, here's the deal:
1. Get off the boat, you'll be near some blue (or is it gray?) buildings. One of them is for a gear truck. Pay them like $8 and you get round trip service to and from the park. Have a cell phone to call them for the return. It's some of the best money you'll have ever spent. I've made the walk with gear. It's do-able, but not fun.

2. They ask when you'll be at the park. You walk over to Casino Point, and your stuff should be waiting for you.

3. You find a place near where they left your gear, preferably not right on top of someone. You'll see other divers there already, so it should be obvious how the lineup works. My favorite places are on the wall closest to the water, or near the wall of the casino.

4. Hit the stairs, have a fun dive. When you come back up, head over to the fill station. You can run a tab all day if you give them your C-card (if I remember correctly). Otherwise, it's like $6 a fill when you pick up the tank. Go eat something, or have fun snorkeling. Come back, get your tank. Don't forget sun block.

5. Go dive. Tell everyone you found the Jacques Cousteau plaque, even though you didn't. You'll look cooler to all the girls.

6. Come back up, start all over again.

There are lockers for valuables, although I think most people forgo them. I've been there maybe 6 times now and have not had a problem, and I have never heard from anyone who has. That said, don't leave your wallet in plain sight, but you're probably cool to tuck it away in the deep corner of your dive bag.

Have fun! Casino Point really is a soCal treasure.

Bill,

Was that "in the snow, uphill, both ways"?
