I'm getting ready to bite the bullet and purchase a Canon G10 or G11. I am interested in thoughts/opinions around each camera. The prices seem pretty close so I'm not quite sure which one is better.

I'm looking for a camera that will serve double-duty for both land and underwater. I'm also looking for a camera that gives me a faster shutter speed and take quality underwater pictures.

So, camera diving afficianados, what pearls of wisdom do you have to share with me?

May all your dives reveal the glorious wonders found only in the ocean,
Joy

Hello Joy,

I am looking at cameras also. My big confusion is between Cannon and Nikon. Why Cannon over Nikon? Another item that I have yet to define for myself is EOS. What is that? I seem to have a slight grip on tiff vrs jpeg vrs raw. The EOS vrs SLR has got me in the dark at the moment.

When you say faster shutter speed, are you speaking of the delay between shots? or actually the speed of the shutter?

I think that one of the reasons that folks have more interest in Canon P&S cameras is that Canon makes their own underwater housings and makes them very cheaply. If I were looking today for a P&S, I would probably look at the S90 since it is smaller and has almost the same sensor quality as the G11 and it costs a bit less.

2nd that.

I currently shoot with an Ikelite/G10 setup and am very happy with it, but if I were looking for another setup today I would go with the S90. Has all the same features as the G'series and designed more appropriately for underwater use.
Check out this thread for more info: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/canon-corner/313119-s90-ikelite-housing-first-impressions.html

For about the price of a G11 or G10 plus Ikelite housing, you can get the S90 with FIX. The S90 fix combo should accept a varied amount of wide angle / macro lenses, is much more compact then the G'series "S90 in Fix Housing is almost as small as the G'series camera by itself" and has a faster lens. You can't go wrong;)

I have a G10 that I love but the G11 files are so much cleaner. I wouldn't even consider the G10 against the G11. The S90 or G11? Tough call but it's the same sensor so you can't go wrong either way.

Bladephotog, forgive me for asking what probably should be obvious to me. But what do you mean when you say it's the same sensor?

A digital camera's sensor is what converts the optical image to an electrical signal. The sensor in the G11 and S90 are the same "which is much improved from the older G10's sensor". You'll find that SLR's have larger and much greater quality sensors then P&S systems, which is one of the major reasons they tend to have better IQ.

What he means is that the S90 and G11 use the same sensor and imaging engine (plus RAW on both) but the S90 has a lens that is twice as fast, f2.0 vs f2.8, that is a full stop faster.

The G10 I believe is discontinued or soon to be.
