My wife and I had a 34 hr trip from CZM to ORD via ABL and DFW. It was two days after we were married (March 07'). Trip was supposed to be around 6 hrs.
Broken inbound plane = Delayed flight = Late departure = Storms closed DFW airport for hours = divert to Abilene after circling till' we needed fuel. = six hours trapped on AA 737-800 on ground = Short trip back to DFW = Crappy/dirty hotel room in Irvine, TX = Planes and crew not where they are supposed to be = more waiting to get home = Not so happy new bride = Travel Nightmare .

We have been doing the bag drag since. No problems in four trips. I think it might actually be quicker if you are direct CUN. ADO bus is fine.;)
In July I/we went from CUN airport to Puerto Juares (whale sharks) then Puerto Juares to Playa Del Carmen:
Home - Cancun Valet
Vans were nice newer Ford passenger vans that have seats for 12 People. Met us right outside CUN terminal. Driver held a clipboard with my name on it. Price is for the van-load not Per-person. Booked on the web. Clear instructions. No phone calls needed. Van was on time and I will use them again for a group(s).

I have not been through the Cancun airport in a few years but it used to be awful about crowding and long lines. The convenience factor of CZM vs CUN is worth some of the extra cost if Cancun's airport hasn't improved.
The opening of Terminal 3 for flight to/from the US has made a big difference. Really nice terminal and every time I've been through, the immigration and customs lines have moved well. (disclaimer - I don't travel at peak holiday times or weekends. Might be a different experience at peak travel times and weekends when more people are coming and going)

That's good to know. I'll consider the bag drag next time then if the savings are there.

You probably won't miss your return flight even if the ferries aren't running. You should be able to catch a last-minute flight on Mayair from CZM to CUN. It'll cost you around $70 each but you'll make your flight.

If the weather is so bad that the ferries aren't running, I don't think I'd want to be on a small plane making that crossing.

The last few times when the ferries weren't running, there was nothing that would have made the flight anything more than slightly bouncy. In fact, last time I remember the car ferry not running, the weather was great save for the waves. Besides, it's what, a 20 minute flight? No big deal. Of course, my opinion may be different than others seeing as I'm a pilot myself.

Isn't Google going to build a bridge? It's already on their maps. :silly:

??? Both GoogleMaps and Google Earth show no bridge :cowboy:

They just fixed that a few hours ago. As of yesterday evening, the "Phantom Bridge" was still there on GM from Playa del Carmen to San Miguel. It's gone now.
