hey everyone ,
i am wondering the following.
can instructors work "from home" ?
i am divemaster and cmas 2 star diver, do have a small boat and 2.5 complete sets of divegear. if i now do my idc could i than teach friends, neighbors etc and register them or do padi instructors need to be affiliated to a center ?
greetings from spain

Although I am not positive about Europe, its no problem here in the US. I took my AOW from an independent instructor.

However, if all you want to do is teach neighbors and friends, you may find the costs of insurance, etc to be prohibitive.

no problems in australia... we have a few "private" instructors who come and hire the shop's pool.

as mentioned above, it'd be advisable to contact PADI and discuss There will be additional insurance and possibly PADI membership requirements that a shop would normally take care of.

no need for "opinions" ring PADI and ask.

It's fine, you do not have to be affiliated with a store to register your students, there are standards in place that you have to adhere to but this is achieved easily enough without working for a dive centre. Once you are an instructor you can order materials online and register them online and there are helplines etc to assist you if needed in getting it all set up, go for it!

I am an independant instructor and to be honest, it is easier to be affliated with dive centre, if nothing more than to keep your costs down.

Insurance isn't required in the UAE, but anyone who doesn't take it out is a fool in my view, so that cost has to be factored in. However, depending on the amount of materials that is ordered from PADI, you will be able to buy your materials from the dive centre at a better price than you would from PADI.

If you aren't bothered that the dive centre details are shown on your students' cards, use their PIC's for your certifications. It will still be your name and instructor number on the card, and you are the one receiving the credit for the certification.

If your students want to eLearning, again, through a dive centre you are not paying the fee and then giving the access pass to the students.

Worth considering

Was wondering what a "guesstimate" of the cost of Insurance would be here in the U.S.A.?

I use DAN for my insiurance, and forme to be covered (professional), my family (recreational x 3), and also allows me to add up to 40 students costs 220 sterling. So I guess that would be about 350 US

Echoing others, The answer to your question is yes. Unlike SSI who require you to affiliate with a shop. Your quest to be a private instructor for friends and family require a substantial investment of time and money. I would recommend you use the PADI worksheet that helps you figure out your per student cost. I would also recommend a minimum of 6 BC's and FOur Regs, a variety of wetsuits appropriate for your area, adequate weights, portable compressor etc etc etc etc before hanging your shingle out.
Perhaps an easier solution would be to have an agreement with your LDS which allows you to use their equipment for students you recruit...

BTW I also have insurance although not required in my part of the world..

I would be happy to discuss with you via email or PM..

Cheers,
Roger
