Going on a family vacation to Hawaii (parents 50th anniversary). Was going to dive 1 maybe 2 days and rent gear instead of lugging mine out for a a few dives. In case the dive shop won't let me use the Cobalt hose on their first stage can I still use just the computer part?

Most dive shops are pretty flexible when it comes to gear. I would suggest taking the computer and hose with you. Easier for the tank monkey to deal with swapping hoses than removing the SPG, checking the spool, putting the QD on, etc. For that matter just rent the gear and swap the hoses yourself and put the SPG back on when you return it.

But to answer your question the computer can be submerged sans hose.

Thanks for the quick replies. I was taking the hose regardless.

Can the HP inlet on the Cobalt be sealed?

pretty sure I wouldn't want to get salt water in there.

It is sealed. IIRC the pressure sensor is made from a ceramic material that mated to the QD. So the slight amount of water entering the inlet does not go anywhere. And when you soak the computer in fresh water the salt water is removed.

On the other hand, the one time I tried this (stuck the Cobalt in a drysuit pocket as a backup), it suffered a spectacular flood at 200'.

Hi Everyone...Thank you for helping out in this forum!

Jessmcquaid....Yes, you can submerge the unit underwater without it being hooked up to an HP hose. We don't recommend diving with it disconnected but it can be done. The HP and LP sensors are separate and work individually. However, please make sure that you are diving with another gauge to monitor the air supply in the tank.

Thanks again everyone!

The HP sensor is very well sealed (it must be, to withstand the tank pressure). It won't be damaged by salt water- the surface is ceramic. It would be good to rinse it out so salt doesn't build up inside.

The worst thing about diving the Cobalt not connected to a tank is that you will endure a full minute of beeping out of air warning at the beginning of the dive. However, your gas consumption in the log will look great!
