I bought three units before getting certified. Didn’t dive the eccr until certification, but dove the 100% o2 unit in a pool before. I read the Mastering Rebreathers book by Bozanic and used the NOAA book and tables for the o2 unit. Navy also publishes book for free.

I could never get training on the first unit, as instructors evaporated.

As far as software lock out, some units require passcodes to unlock trimix (hammerhead units.)

After training, I was surprised there wasn’t more to it. Still have to be careful of course. Most of my ccr diving is still shallow, air dil, etc. Over 100 hours easy at this point, still consider myself new to it.

It all depends on the person but I am sure there are people that are comfortable in the water, have the right mental capacity and that can read well that could self train themselves on any of this stuff be it open or closed circuit. But not for everyone.

Diving a ccr is no rocket science, but training is usefull to know what to do when things go wrong. I'am at 120 hours and still leraning every dive. There's so much to learn that isn't taught in class.

Exactly, like when when you jump off the boat they want an ok signal then you disappear for an hour

After a rebreather course you are gone for a lifetime
