Hi all,

Shot this while diving off Anacapa Island yesterday and was wondering if anyone could tell me what the egg-like thing in the foreground with the "eye" is.

I've seen them several times and find them intriguing but can find info on them.

Thanks muchly

I'd hazard a guess that it is some form of Sea Squirt? Also known generically as Tunicate.

If not that, then a species of sponge?

maybe someone with a Phd and familiarity with latin can clarify?

Thank you! Never saw that there was a body under the shell. Interesting creature.

Thanks, Sarita75. It was a pleasant day for the most part.

I'll post a few other shots from yesterday in another thread.

Yep, Megathura crenulata or giant keyhole limpet is correct. I have one of my early columns about them at the following link. I should write a new one as I filmed a great looking individual out in the open. I've even seen them spawn in Catalina waters.
