If you would return...would take an hotel in Cabo Pulmo or in Cabo san lucas near the marina ??

From Cabo Sam Lucas, Cabo Pulmo is a day trip for operators by boat...is the local dives at Cabo Pulmo are better than the ones at Cabo San Lucas?

I would personally not take a hotel in Cabo Pulmo, as the available hotels are, shall we say, not quite 5-star (and my wife likes her luxury...) On the other hand, there are some very nice house rentals near Cabo Pulmo. If you want to get away from it all, the house rental near Cabo Pulmo is definitely the way to go.

Cabo Pulmo is not a boat trip; it's a 2-hr car trip followed by local boat dives. You can take a boat to Cabo Pulmo, I'm sure, but it's a much longer trip.

Cabo San Lucas operators will take you to Shipwreck, Santa Maria, or Chileno for quasi-local diving if everyone on the boat agrees. They're a 30-45 minute boat ride.

Thanks again, everyone, for all the great info. Last night we booked a 5 night trip, staying at the Costa Real, mainly because we're lazy. Now to plan the diving. Are there any must-dive spots or does anyone have a favorite in mind? Also, can anyone tell me about the shore diving at Chileno?
Thanks, Mark

My buddy & I are planning a trip to Cabo August 7-11 & I have a few questions.
1) We are planning to stay at the Costa Real. I believe its right there at the marina. Anyone know any scoop on it?
2) Is there a decent number of dive sites around Cabo to keep us occupied for 3 days, 3 dives a day? Should we look into some alternatives?
3) What's the frequency of seeing sea lions at Cabo?
4) What's a good offday excursion (possibly involving car rental)?
5) Are there any local grocery stores around the marina area (cut down on bfast, lunch costs) and
6) Any good restaurant recommendations?
Hopefully, there's a few Cabo experts out there that can help. Thanks, Mark

Costa Real right in the marina can be noisy so ask for a room at the far end of the building.
My favorite dive op is Amigos Del Mar which is a short walk around the marina at the bottom of the hill by the cruise ship pier. Amigos del Mar has the biggest, nicest boats which have a head as well as oxygen and good DMs. Most of the other ops dive out of a panga. I would check in with them right away or email them to get Cabo Pulmo or Gordo Banks set up. They do make you do at least one dive in the bay area to see what your skills are like before they will take you across the bay to Santa Maria, or out to Gordo Banks, or Cabo Pulmo.
I have seen sea lions under the water several times and had one cute, little girl buzz up in my face, I think they liked the sub-duck that the DM had. I saw the sea lions around the tip of the rocks - lands end - close to the arch. There is a pretty good surge between the rocks there so they don't always dive that spot.
Off day excursion for me would be to get the 4wheeler guys to take you on a personal tour way out in the boonies, you can be gone for hours and see an ostritch ranch, a dried up water fall (or a real water fall depending on the season) and meet real mexican ranchers. We use the fourwheeler guys across from the Bahia on the way to the Office. Their regular tour takes you to the beach (not to the lighthouse anymore) and it is kinda cool too.
Walk a little ways down from the Costa Real, about 5 blocks over and one block back, towards town center to the SuperMercado for groceries or take a bus to Soriano's (like a walmart with groceries)
I second the Fish House restaurant (good seafood soup - no A/C) and also add Mariscos Mazatlan (good food, not expensive, no airconditioning, locals eat there too). The Office has good lunch food too.
Go to the show at the Giggling Marlin I think it is at 9pm or 10pm, it is hilarious and just a little riske. Have fun! Oh, look at www.tripadvisor.com at other traveler's thoughts on the Costa Real formerly Plaza Las Glorias.

I dove Santa Maria and it was pretty nice, but there are usually several tour boats doing snorkeling tours. You'll have to rent tanks from a DO in town and tote them out yourself. :sharks: and there are two little, white tipped reef sharks that inhabit the dive area close to Pelican Rock close to Lover's Beach. Have fun, Choco

Choco,
Thanks so much for reading the thread and all of the great info. Both my buddy and I kind of questioned Costa Real, but we got it for an obnoxiouly cheap price. I doubt that either of us will be in the room except to sleep, so I think it will work out well for us.

I'm definitely leaning toward Amigos Del Mar - Luis seems to be a common brag on this forum. I've learned over the years that a good divemaster who can point out things to you is worth his of her weight in gold, and well worth the price in tips. I recently got back from Bonaire and was so disappointed that a highly regarded DM spent most of his time doing flips U/W instead of pointing things out to us.

I also appreciate your old threads - I went over them today (embarrased on my timing) and found a wealth of info.
-Mark
