Update: bought the W3. Testing it (and the BP/W and new reg set) in the pool tomorrow. Will buy the vest at a later point, although my girlfriend decided the extra 3mm underlayer would be worth it right now.
 
3mm with a good hooded vest. If it is cold enough for a 5mm, it is cold enough for a hood, and if it is cold enough for a hood, it is most certainly cold enough for a hooded vest. Get a W3 and a U1. Purchase at the same time to make sure the U1 will go under the W3, shouldn't be an issue as it is only 3mm.

i only dive a 5mm but hate hoods - if i'm in a drysuit and and temp below 15c then hood.


get a 5mm you won't get hot but won't get cold.
