OK I expect boos and hisses, If you want a cheap basic wetsuit check Amazon for a NeoSport 3MM, about $80 and shipped 2 Days for prime accounts. The size seems a little small but exchange shipping is free to negligible and fast to send it back if you guess wrong

Mexico has very high input duties that cause any import goods to be much higher than the same product purchased in the US

Leisurepro has free returns if it doesn't fit and their prices are pretty good. Amazon usually has clearance stock cheap, but returns can be a pain. Pro Dive in Coz will give you a discount depending on which dive op you are using. I had to buy a mask and they gave me 10% off since I was diving with Blue Magic.

Check out Lavacore wetsuits, they are easier to pack, thinner, and my wife loves hers. They run a little over $100, but seem to be great suits. Use less weight too!

I still would not plan on buying gear in Coz.

Safe travels,
Jay

The dive op that I have reserved with only offers 3mm shorties and after being stung a few times, I really prefer a full wet suit otherwise I'd just rent.
I hate that about local dive shops. So many only carry shorties because they're easier to fit to people, but that's a cop out.

Google shows at least 10 scuba stores in Denver. Maybe you need to do a tour...??

One alternate idea is get a dive skin to wear under a shorty, but I wear one under my full suit - makes it easier to get on & off.

I'm planning on getting a 3mm full wetsuit for my diving in Cozumel next month and am wondering if there are any dive shops in Cozumel that are recommended to buy gear at. I would buy it here at home (Denver Colorado) but the prices at the local dive shops are simply too expensive for my taste since they only carry the fancy name brands. I've looked online but I really like being able to try things on before I buy them and since I only dive a couple times a year, I'm really not interested in getting the "best of the best" but something that is affordable. The dive op that I have reserved with only offers 3mm shorties and after being stung a few times, I really prefer a full wet suit otherwise I'd just rent.

Recommendations?

Have you checked the local craigslist? I'm going to Kauai in 8 days (not that I'm counting) and the current water is a bit cool for my 3mm shortie. I found a lightly used 3mm full for $30.

Ooh, good to know about CSR! Been to Coz about a dozen times and somehow never heard of them before.

Another idea if you are not brand-conscious might be to check out a Sam's Club or Costco or something. A few years back my hubs found a 3 mm shorty (they had full length ones too) at Sam's for $20. I guess it's for tubing or something bc it says SeaDoo on it, but the neoprene seems to work the same as a diving one would!

OP, you can return things-----that you buy online.....btw, I've never had a problem with getting a wetsuit that fits(ie buying online.)....Another possibility--rent one.....?????....

EDIT:....but, if you insist on buying one there, start making some calls---ie Aldora, Prodive, etc etc(Prodove has always had a boat load of stuff I see everytime I've walked in front of their shop.......)

I'm not sure about wetsuits but I just paid $53 for a safety sausage in Cozumel that I can buy online for $13. No choice as I lost the one I took with me..... next time I'll bring a spare.

Next time???-------borrow the DM's...:)

You should give your local shops another look.

We sell dive gear to skiers/divers from Mexico and our friends in Cozumel. Have you considered a used suit in good condition?

Also, you might give Scubaboard Business Sponsors a try.

Javier at CSR repairs and services my equipment and I am very impressed with his service. He has a full test and repair bench and his prices are excellent. I have purchased some hardware from them and the prices were reasonable but I haven’t purchased other gear there. They have a US phone number and you could inquire on stock and pricing. Their US Phone # is (817) 886 5978 (Ft Worth, Texas area code) and their website is: http://cozumelscubarepair.com/eng/index.html which shows that they do carry some wetsuites.
