Do burst disk leak or just blow? I was told mine was leaking and had to be replaced.

Thanks

A leak is possible, although not common. In any case, it's good to replace it periodically.

Did you bring it in for a leak? Did you get the old one back?

There's really no way to tell over the internet. It might have been bad or the service facility might just want to sell burst disks.

As for your question, I've never seen one leak through the burstable portion of the disk. If it starts to go, it just goes. However it is possible for the disk to leak around the edges.

flots.

They sometimes do, but all that I have seen were reused and not tightened enough. Its not really the burst disk leaking but where it seats.
But you do not suppose to reuse them AFAIK. Its easy to detect - just spray soap water and if it bubbles it leaks.

The unitized burst disc assemblies are easier to install leak free.

The older ones with a separate burst disc and plastic washer could leak if the washer deforms. They need to be properly torqued and have the torque applied fairly rapidly to prevent the washer from deforming and extruding, and the latter is generally what causes leaks down the road.

In some cases, a leak may just be due to inadequate torque and a slight tweak to snug it up can fix it - but that's generally the fix on a newly installed disc not one that's been in service awhile.

Re-using a burst disc is a really bad idea as the disc bulges outward against the bolt that secures it and conforms to the hole in the bolt. If you remove and replace it, the odds are it will not line up again in the same spot and it will be very likely to fail.
