This is interesting. I am pulling out my old Poseidon Cyklon and have been thinking about trying it set up differently than the standard OW 90cm hose octo/70cm hose primary 2nd stage.

While I do like the idea of a bungied octo under the chin, I have no desire whatsoever to go with a long primary 2nd stage hose wraped around me. I do not cave dive and do not penetrate wrecks - and feel fine that in an OOA situation the longer 90cm octo hose will be perfectly fine.

The question is though; do I use the longer 90cm hose on my octo (traditional way) - or maybe use the shorter 70cm hose on my octo over the shoulder and bungied under my chin - and the longer 90cm hose as my primary (And to share)?

For those who bungie your octo under the chin, do you go over the left or right shoulder? If over the right, do you ever find that the 2nd stage hoses get in the way of each other? If you come over the left shoulder with your octo, does it get in the way of the inflator?

If anyone is intrested, I saw that Manta offers a "Regulator Necklace" for this.

Awesome. I've always had trouble picturing how exactly people use the bungie... but googling regulator necklace brought up this nifty link where you can either by that Manta thing for $10, or it describes with a good picture how to make your own necklace with bungie. I have a necklace with slightly longer than standard length hoses (I don't remember exactly how long they are) and it works just fine. I also use the necklace with another reg that has standard length hoses and while the octo is fine you have to snuggle pretty close to use my primary. Putting the longer hose on the primary will make your life easier. Personally I run my octo hose under my right arm and my primary hose over my right shoulder; it works for the type of diving I do.

Here's how I had my regs set up before going to a long hose primary (now 7'). I had the secondary second on a 22" hose bungeed. The primary second was on a 40" with a swivel (more on this in a moment) that came under my right arm and into my mouth (this was considered DIR for open ocean awhile back). It gets the benefit of having your secondary always available (it's under your chin) and allows donation of the working regulator in your mouth. What's needed, however, is a reliable swivel (without the swivel, the reg would be pulling your mouth up). You do NOT want any swivel with a screw in it holding both parts together. The failure rate is high enough to avoid these. The only swivels I know with no reported failures are the Atomic swivel (very pricey) and the Kirby Morgan swivel (you can buy one for a reasonable price at TechDivingLimited online). Best of luck.

That's what I'm going to try next tine out. My alternate 2nd from the left has been great for swimming and ascending air shares on a 36 inch hose. What I have not been pleased with how quickly I can retrieve it from my choice of homes. I'm going to move it to a necklace just to have an elegantly accessible home for it.

Thanks everyone! Visuals always help me, and along with a great discriptive worded perfectly, my question is answered.

" and the military boneheads ".

I'm sure they were all very lucky to have been in your presence.

If you set your regs up like this you should also do S-drills. You need to know how to deploy and stoe the long hose and you need to practice this.
