Not to start any fights between DIR and non DIR, but I am looking for a plain brass SPG that fits the DIR standards. What are your suggestions and any sources?

You may have something here. I thought that for the durability, DIR was requiring brass without a rubber boot. I have done some more searching, and can’t seem to find where I might have read that. What would you suggest? I am open minded.

I use SS (Uwatec, etc.) for back-gas. NO BOOT !!! (this is
VERY important to me because I dive in salt-water most
of the time.)

I must confess to using a plastic (NO BOOT) on a deco bottle
but it is (relatively) protected and no likely to be slammed around.

There is nothing wrong, per se, with high-grade-marine-brass
but I think you'll find SS to be more readily available and more
corrosion resistant.

Gauge should have appropriate markings for accuracy
in determining "3rds" or "6ths", etc. In other words,
1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000 psi markings are not adequate.

I have the same Uwatec gauage on the link provided by tombiowami and I ordered mine via Extreme Exposure. Although pricey, it is a nice gauge and has very precise markings (50 PSI). Luminous face also shows up well at night.

Thanks for the help. The Uwatec gauage is a little high, but may be an option. Are there any other suggestions?

I am a new diver, but even in my short time have noticed with scuba diving you either pay the price for the good stuff in the beginning, or after you buy the bad.

I have never heard of anyone bragging on the bargain parts they got when a crisis underwater entails.

Not to say the Uwatec is the best or only one, I do not know. I do know I paid 70 or so for a Zeagle one that is plastic, and rattles, but does work. I would say the extra 40 is worth it myself.

If it is good enough for someone 3 miles into Wakulla...

You don't NEED a metal SPG. It's simply a matter of how much of
a risk-of-breakage are you willing to accept? If all of your diving is
from a boat or sandy shoreline and you never drop the gear or
slam it into a hard object, and no one else ever drops their gear
on yours then plastic is probably "good enough".

You don't *need* to buy a UWatec/SCUBAPro either. If DaCor
or Mares (what's the diff, eh?) or Oceanic, etc. makes a less
expensive metal gauge that is accurate: buy it.

I bought the UWatecs etc because that is what my LDS
carries.
