yeppers, we were the little minnows in the quarry with the lime green hoods. God those hoods are so rediculously gaudy, but I guess the instructors can find us easily..... sorry for kicking all the silt up in the quarry for you experts...we have yet to master our bouyancy.

Hey, the shop that I work with intentionally uses a local lake with an easily kicked up bottom. You couldn't have messed up that quarry as badly as I messed up that lake when I got my OW cert. LOL

Actually you didn't screw the vis up too bad. I know it's hard when you first hit the open water, you'll get the hang of it if you work at it. I want one of those hoods to go with the rest of my gaudy gear :D I LIKE being obnoxious!

Safe diving to you!

Just wanted to drop in and say hello. I just got certified from Huron Scuba in Brighton, MI, down in White Star QUarry earlier today. At first I didnt understand why they go way down to Ohio, when there are so many lakes by us. But when I got there, I understood, crystal clear water, with 50 foot viz, and a water temp of around 50. That was the clearest I have ever seen fresh lake water....... It was nice, did 2 dives on Saturday, the 8th, and 2 on Sunday, to earn the certification from NAUI. If anybody needs a buddy around South Lyon, MI area (Kensington, Spring Mill Pond, etc) dont be afraid to drop me a line........Now all I need to get is the BC and I am set......

Chris
Hi Chris: I read your post and wanted to ask you what was expected of you when you did your cert. I have 3 more classes left, and then will go to get certified. I have been having a difficult time in class...I'm just a very slow learner, and not quite comfortable yet with the whole thing. It would be nice to hear about your class experience. Also, we have a quarry out here in PA (Bethlehem, PA) that we go to for cert., however, it's not as nice as your quarry sounded. OUrs if very cloudy.

Well, here is what I believe, there are standards that NAUI uses, it requires 3 dives or whatever. I think Huron Scuba, my LDS, trys to go above and beyond on the learning portion. I took the class at my university, who the owner use to go to, so now he also teaches there. And it was something like 7 class sessions. THen when we got to the quarry, we did 4 dives. I will briefly explain each one, semi going off memory, semi going off my logbook.
#1: We just did the removal of regulators, and essentially getting use to the open water.
#2: I forgot, we did a skin dive here, I guess it is required. Essentially we worked on snorkel skills. Yeah, I only had 4 pounds ona weight belt, and was barely able to get down, actully it was hard to get down. BUt I got closest to this boat in 30' of water.......im proud of that.
#3: We worked on alternate air sources, mask being filled with water, doing the whole pivot trying to find perfect bouyancy(inhale you rise, exhale you fall), and buddy breathing.
#4: Worked on the controlled remergency surface accent (CESA), lost regulators (the sweep of the arm, and reach behind, note I wasnt able to do the reach one because my tank was to low, and completed the following dive), compass navigation which is pretty simple (navigate on top of water with snorkel), went a little deeper for this dive, and not to mention oral inflation of the BC underwater.
#5: we did a rescue in 10 ft of water essentially. In water to deep to stand, we removed and replaced our BC on top of the water. Removing the BC is in confined water (pool) only. On this one we also worked on underwater compass navigation.

Thats about all I can remember for now, if there is more, please sombody include it below! Anybody wanna go diving and have an extra BC?

Oh, and your Local dive shop really should take the time and teach you. If they do a good job, you should have no problem with the openwater. Openwater is the icing on the cake to the whole class. It is so much fun!
