And yes, I agree, getting the tank as close to your back as possible is what you want.

What will the effect be if the tank is an inch or two further out from another design? Remember I'm a beginner though I will say that I had pretty good balance underwater. Of course that was with the BC that he is recommending to me.

gr8ful divr,

I would like to see that 200ft Viz TravelLite design. If he thinks he can design better than Halcyon I'll like to know on what basis. His comments however, show a complete lack of understanding of a bp/w system, and I'll be suprised if his design looks more like a back inflate than a bp/w.

As for the halcyon, I've been using one since dive #2 & never looked back. It's really good but there are cheaper alternatives out there.

Cheers,

SangP

The DSS system doesn't use an STA, and the tank sits right on the backplate. I haven't dived any other system, but I can say there are no issues with instability with that one. Unfortunately, I STILL can't reach my valve . . . :)

I'm a recent convert to BP/W myself.
Go with Tobin and DSS. You can't lose.
Period.

I use the Halcyon eclipse system with the STA and frequently dive steels. Never had a problem keeping my face out of the water. It comes down to personal preference, but you can't go wrong with the Halcyon system. Bit expensive, but in my opinion worth it.

Forget that noise comin' from your LDS. The DSS single rig is the way to go. I just got one, and I'm quite pleased. The tank is flat against the plate, stable, and I can reach the valve.

I'm using a DiveRite plate with a Venture wing with a single AL80 and I'm not dead yet. I really like the setup and I don't believe it has hampered my development one bit.

Interesting that your LDS owner said that the BP/Wing wouldn't be good for you but pushes a setup that "he had designed and manufactured that adopted all of the same principles as the Halcyon". If it adopted all the same principles of the Halcyon then why wouldn't it be just as dangerous to your development?

I say save yourself some $$$. If you know your going to eventually need a plate, buy it now. I have used mine diving deep and shallow, cold and warm water. It has not given me any trouble.

The flat jetharness plate probably puts the tank closer to your back than any other BP?W set up. If you want to get the tank really close, that's your set up. For me, it's too close and there's some serious head banging going on. I used a piece of rubber decking (you see it all the time on boats, it's about an inch thick) to place the tank out a little. Most backplates are made for doubles, but the tank is still really close to your back compared with your average BC.

Oh, rub it in, rub it in :)
