One reason dive shops steer beginners towards jacket BCs is that they're easier to use at that stage of a diver's career.

Why do you think they are easier to use for a beginner?

One reason dive shops steer beginners towards jacket BCs is that they're easier to use at that stage of a diver's career. Nothing wrong in that. Beginner skiers find the "new" deeply waisted skis easy to turn and control. Many experienced skiers prefer more traditional barely waisted skis. Or motorcycling - I ride a machine capable of almost 190mph, but there's no way I could have started with that.

Horses for courses, as well as personal preference.

I don't think jacket bc are easier to use...A beginner would benefit right away of a less bulky system......I use a BP and I'm not an advanced diver....I had a jacket bc and as soon as I tried the BP, it was like night and day. It was like wearing nothing...;) There are no jacket bc that can achieve the streamliness and horizontal posture of a BP....no way....
It has to be well adjusted though, maybe that's why some people didn't like it in the first place...
BP= proper trim, improving performance, ease of diving!

Of those of you who "don't get it" I'm in the market for a single wing and SS backplate. :)

Simple because they are

That is not an explanation.. perhaps you forgot to finish your post? I am curious as to why they would be easier for beginners to use. I never used a BP/W early on in diving so I can't think of any reason why they would be easier and am interested to hear others' experiences.

One of the reason could be - easier to maintain vertical position on the surface :)

That makes it a device that is easier to stay on the surface vertical (though quite honestly I do not find it harder in a BP/W to stay vertical). It does not mean it is a device that makes it easier to dive as a beginner. They are separate things. :)

Again that's the fact of the matter many diving instructors feel a Jacket style BD is easier to don and less of a hassle to adjust for a beginner also if their is a problem and a student becomes unconscious on the surface they have a better chance of floating face up in lieu of face down.

Ok so I guess it is more something that makes the instructor's job easier then rather than diving for the student? Perhaps I was mistaken but I took the poster to mean that it would make diving easier for a beginner, and I was wondering why this was the case.

With adjustment, I would have thought a BP/W with a one piece harness would be easier to adjust than a jacket BCD to fit all students? I just remember in OW class, whilst my BCD fitted me ok, others had ones that were a bit large or a bit small. With a harness you can get it to fit just for you very well and easily adjust it for someone else. Takes a few minutes only (in my experience, when I have loaned my BP/W to others).

I don't think you are reading my post right some Instructors feel it is safer for the student, as for adjusting the harness on a back plate versus a jacket it is simple with most jackets as you just use velcro straps in lieu of sliding the webbing through slots on the backplate trying it on to see if you can touch the top of the back plate re adjusting the webbing until you can do this!

Unfortunately easier is not always safer ;-)

Well my BP/W can fit my 6'4 friend with a rugby player build but my ladyhawk BC won't fit him ;) so in my experience I find BP/Ws more adjustable :)

as far as the safety aspect I am interested in more info about this as to whether instructors find this to be the case..
