The old Converse All-Star (Chuck Taylors) hi-tops worked well for me. They provide some support for my ankles, and the bottoms are good and solid. I found they work better the the thick soled dive boots and aren't really any bigger than rock boots so they fit in fins. They already have drain holes in them. Cost wise they are in line with good heavy dive boots and cheaper than the rock boots. On the down side they take longer to dry. I use 3 mm neoprene socks in mine. Take the neoprene socks with you when you try them on for the best fit.

no, but he wanted stiff soles, and the best stiff soles out there are actual shoes and/or overboots. Use some neoprene socks underneath them and you have a much better solution than expensive wetsuit booties

Have you ever seen or tried Rangers?
I have a pair and they are something else.
BTW, I bought a pair of size 15 and use them with a 3 mil sock inside for water in the mid 40's.
My feet are toasty warm and I can hike goat trails.

can't, they don't exist out here, and they don't make them wide enough. I have a 14extra wide foot so I can't wear boots with stuff uppers because they don't make wide size booties. The other issue is in sidemount there weren't fins for a long time that will fit something like that in the pocket and be neutrally buoyant. The new OMS might, but I don't think so since the XXL's they have are too small for my foot with my current overboots
