like some of the messages dripping with sarcasm and the one where sps talked about the owner or the resort and several other sarcastic type posts. Maybe its just the way i am reading them, it just seemed that way.

You still never answered my question though is it because you were there and didnt have a problem? or did you know someone that was there and had a problem. I am just trying to get the picture here as i am going there in a couple weeks.

Dripping with scarcasm? Example please? Spc taked about the owner? and I said what, that you thought might have been scarcastc? I'm really not following you, Aaron. Trust me, I think you read something into it that was't there because that was not my intent. If you could provide an example I might understand what you mean. Thanks.

I've already stated that I was there, stayed at the Divi Flamingo, did not rent a car to shore dive, nor rented a house and I had no problems. I was totally unaware that any crime existed on the island till I got back and was told that people that rent cars had them broken into, rented homes were burglarized etc. I was again told the same things by people I met and dove with in Coz, Dominca, St Lucia and Saba . I have no reason not to believe them, especailly since I see the same thing being confirmed by people on this board and other message boards that have been linked.

I hope your stay is pleasant and you have a great time and have great dives. I might think twice about renting a car though.

pilot fish:
You live on Bonaire, work on Bonaire? Bruce, are you in the dive industry, car rental, resort?

I have been living on Bonaire for 32 years and own the Carib Inn. My comments have absolutely nothing to do with defending Bonaire or my business. I have been more outspoken about this crime problem than most from day one.

I can say again that the rental agencies are not involved. And as far as "where would anyone go if they stole a car" - cars are not stolen for the sake of stealing a car to keep or sell. They are either joy rides or in some cases stripped for parts. Spare tires are stolen because someone else needs one for their car or a car they are fixing. Same with batteries and gas. Unfortunately cheaper (easier?) to steal than buy the parts etc.

Bruce where are some of the best places to get conch on the island we will be there feb 26 - mar 6th

Ok pilot if you had nothing happen then why are talking so bad of a place when it is hear say to you. You live in NYC right do you know that it is one of the highest per capita in crime, and violence? it really sounds liike your here to start trouble i can understand someone that had a problem putting a post about how bad it is because they would have had a terrible experience. but it sounded like you had a good experience there. How have your experiences been in NYC any theft muggings or anything else?
I guess i dont understand why you are so negative on a place where you had nothing happen to you. I only read of one case in all the research i have done on the island that someone was actually assualted they were a native of the island and the perps were caught and jailed other than that i ahve fond NO other evidence of violence. Everything has been petty crime. Oh i read where a room was broken into cars stolen but guess what the were linked with the assault case. i used to live in Detroit(about five min from downtown not a burb) the murder capital of the world for about 15 years. now it is Washington DC. there is crime everyday every where around us but in such a large nation if they announced all the crime that takes place there would be a 24 hour a day 7 day a week news station dedicated to it in each state. I was tlaking with my Law Prof. who has been diving in BON also and he has said that crime per capita there doesnt nearly compare to the US. Just my thoughts on this whole post after the research i've done. When you such a low Population it is heard more and it makes the news easier what do they have to report about they arent involved in two major conflicts overseas tring to contraol countries so war doesnt break out again. they arent concerned with serial killers who kill eight people and get their appeals denied to go to death so we can read another year of their story of why they should be alive after commiting the crime that commited.

anyways i could go on and on but i gueass i have sadi enough and i am not taking a word of what you have said to heart because what you are saying is hearsay.

Aaron,

Zee Zicht downtown, China Nobo and Conch Soup at Bistro de Paris.

I highly recommend Zee Zicht (and Karels bar on the water across the street). I've never been to Nobo but saw it on a menu somewhere(I think) I have mixed feelings about Bistro, some people think it's great, we passed on it and went to it rains fishes.

I hate to ruin it for you, but it's illegal right now on Bonaire to catch it for commercial use since the supplies have been depleted, so it's all frozen imported stuff. At least it's caribbean...

I don't think Pilotfish was being sarcastic, at least I didn't take it that way. Hey he's New Yawker, they have their own version of the english language anyway(sorry PF...)

As he said, everybody's entitled to their opinion. I wanted to represent the opposing viewpoint which imho is shared by the majority, including him. I actually agree with some of what he said, just do as you're told by the rental agent, leave the windows down and the doors unlocked with nothing in the truck and you'll be fine. If your trip is like our last one, nothing will happen. Except you'll get to meet some friendly local people and do some superb diving.

Have fun,

Steve

Be safe and have a good time in Bonaire. When do you go? Will you rent a car to shore dive around the island or are you staying at a resort? Let us know how it was?

Thanks Steve. I was just trying to be helpful. He said I was being rude but could show no examples of rudeness or scarcasm. I wanted to clarify that never happened nor was my intent. I was passing on a word of caution I heard from very reliable, decent people that had no reason to lie to me. I felt it was my duty as a fellow diver to pass that on.

It just seemed that way in some of the text to me if it wasnt your intent then i understand. I know there is a problem there, but like in major inner city there is problems. It is a third world country and in my travels in some of these areas all rental agencies warn you of leaving stuff in vehicles. Hell in detroit if you left your cell phone in your car they would steal your car and leave your phone just to spite you. anyways

i understand your trying to make a point on it i know there is a petty theft problem and i know not to leave anything in a car. I lived in detroit for 30 years before moving out here to go to law school so i am conditioned to not leaving things in my car.

I am going to rent a car and just to make sure on the tire scam i am taking a chain to lock the spare i had to do the same thing living in detroit cause the kids there would steal them. You know when i did lock it on my truck in detroit the little punks cut the spare cause they couldnt steal it. We are staying at the plaza there. Its a pretty large resort so i am sure there will be no problems there.

Ya know i am kind of tired of debating legal issues i do that for three hours a night at school. I just thought i would start a debate on the issue but i'm done.

Sidebar please. OK counselor, I'd like to correct the record. Would you agree I was not rude?

Have a great time and write a trip report when you return
