Hi All,

I'm interested in booking an absolutely no frills dive trip for sometime next spring. I don't want a resort, although I would not rule out a live aboard. In a perfect world, it would be essentially camping on the beach or something along those lines.

Needless to say, the one requirement would be a dive operation that is safe.

I'd be looking for somewhere hot, preferably the Caribbean.

Does this strike a chord with anyone. Have you been someplace that is a bit off the beaten path with good diving?

Jeff

I've always heard that Utila is one of the cheaper backpacker destinations in the Caribbean. I haven't been yet, but that's what I hear.

I don't know about camping, but the hotel prices sound way cheap. Getting there looks pretty darn expensive though.

I'm interested to hear what you find. I love bare bones vacations, and one that involves diving would be awesome. :)

Kind of too many loose ends. Got a budget?

Have you considered Los Roques, or Cisne (Swan), or Charlottesville Tobago? Is this what you were thinking about... or more something like Barbaretta, Bay Islands?

Or was it more like Utila? Or the out islands of the Bahamas?

Money is not the issue, I can pretty much afford to dive where I want to. What I am looking for is more of a Zen of Diving type experience. Something without the distractions of a regular resort.

I'll take a look at the places suggested so far and see if them fit the bill.

Thanks,

Jeff

Yeah, that they will. Then look also at Cayos Cochinos and Corn Islands.

I've never been to Fiji, but I heard it's a great place for backpacking vacations (although it's a bit further from Maine than the Caribbean), especially in the southern islands http://www.matava.com/. The diving in the Indo-Pacifc speaks for itself. Again, I've never been there, but it's a place I've heard loads about. When it's spring here, it's Irukandji (killer jellyfish) season in the South Pacific, but as far as I know, Fiji's never had any problem with those. Probably a place worth concidering.

I just got back from Puerta Morelos, south of Cancun. My son and I dove with Paul at Wet Set Diver (wetset.com). Very laid back trip. We left on Tuesday and Wilma hit on Thursday. Nothing fancy about this location, good dives. Paul is very attentive and will pick you up at the airport and get you to your hotel. Puerta Morelos is small enough that you walk everywhere. Like I said, nothing fancy, just fun diving.

I'm looking at their web site now.
