I heard a rumor that Blue Grotto was closed due to a cave-in. I took a drive by Blue Grotto on Sunday (after diving Devil's Den). A sign on the gate said it was closed for repairs.

Anyone know what's going on?

I heard a bulkhead on the side by the floating dock collapsed and blew out the spring and that they are in the process of repairing it. Just hearsey, they might have more info if you call.

Ben

Calling is a good idea.

Thanks for the info.

The rumour is true. All of the excessive rain that we have had this year caused a bulkhead to collapse. They are tring to repair it but have to wait until the earth is not so saturated. I would imagine that theyare just getting underway about now.

Ginnie Springs and Rainbow river are both open for business though and are within 25 minutes of Blue grotto.

Not to mention, Ginnie SPrings is way better than BG (except the BBQ). Get cavern training at least, as Devils Ear kicks ass.

Devils Ear has a Cavern you can enter? We figured it just went into the caves so we went down about 20 feet then came back up. Is the cavern more impressive than the ballroom in the main spring?

I was just at BG a month ago. I'm still trying to figure out what the big attraction is/was. Steep, uneven stone steps (no railing), and slanted wooden steps onto the floating dock (imagine navigating all this while the steps and you are wet, carrying and/or wearing gear)....

In fact, while we were waiting on the dock, a woman at the top of the steps did fall, we could hear the "bumps" from the floating dock. She was evidently seriously hurt - we could also hear her sobbing from where we were on the dock. Someone said she'd broken her ankle.

There were multitudes of new divers being certed and silting up the water... and the most interesting things to look at are grafiti and catfish.

I suppose it must be nice if it's calm and not too busy.... but I would not go there again.

I sincerely hope that no one was injured in the cave-in.

BG is pretty safe as caverns go. Its a good place for beginers, who want deep or OH experience.

Yes, Devils Ear has a nice cavern, though its a harder dive than the ballrooom due to the high flow. Devils Eye has a nice cavern too, but is a bit tight in the opening.
